OVERVIEW
The Objective
My goal is to come up with a standard curriculum that takes the student
from beginner to advanced. I know Excel is touched on in a few courses on
different levels but this class with start new from scratch and refresh the
basics and take them to a professional level. Whether you’re exploring
product sales, analyzing which marketing tactics drove the strongest
conversion rates, or wondering how gas prices have trended over the past
5 years.
Goal #1: Learn how to insert data into excel and the different methods to do so
Goal #2: Integrate formulas and graphs from your data
Goal #3: Learn how to monitor sales, rates, and trends
Goal #4: Learn to analyze raw data and reveal powerful insights and trends
otherwise buried in the chaos.
SOLUTION
Mastering the basics in MS Excel is critical for beginners to become highly proficient in
financial analysis. MS Excel is considered the industry standard piece of software in
data analysis. Microsoft’s spreadsheet program also happens to be one of the most
preferred software by investment bankers and financial analysts in data processing,
financial modeling, and presentation. Top companies offer this type of class to their
employees. This shows you how important Excel has become in the workplace. It can
be a useful tool in almost any industry. Logistics and sales and distribution will benefit
the most from the course along with accounting and healthcare and everything in
2
between. This course will help students take full advantage of improvements in
technology and data and ultimately benefit any business.
Rationale
I have chosen to break down the course into a 3-part series. This allows a week for
basic functions and tables and two weeks for Level 2 formulas and graphs and the
remaining 3 weeks on Level 3, mastering excel pivot tables and charts.
Execution Strategy
OUTLINE:
Level 1: Beginner
Pop-up function
Simple insertion: typing formula into cell
Insert Function (Fx)
AutoSum Function
Basic Formulas:
o SUM
o AVERAGE
o COUNT
o COUNTA
o IF
o TRIM
o MAX & MIN
Level 2: Intermediate
Turn data sets into automated graphs
Create affective spreadsheets
Importing data into excel
Level 3: Advanced
Automating your day to day through MACROS and VBA
o MACROS: an action or a set of actions that you can run as many
times as you want
o VBA: visual basic for applications which help create macros to
automate repetitive word and data processing functions and
generate custom forms, graphs, pivot tables, and charts.
Test skills with real world pivot table case studies (i.e., weather, COVID
cases, shark attacks, fast food restaurants)
