Learning Activity 1 – THE PLATE BOUNDARY MODEL
Studying plate boundaries is important because along these
boundaries deformation of the lithosphere is happening. These
geologic events have a great impact not only on the environment
but also on us.
OBJECTIVES
After performing this activity, you should be able to:
1. Explain the processes that occur along continental and oceanic boundaries.
2. Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
MATERIALS
2 sheets of cardboard
modeling clay, two different colors
PROCEDURE
Learning Task No. 1
Set-up A
1. Get a small piece of clay, 1-inch-wide and 4-inches long, and roll it
into a ball, the size of a marble.
2. Press the clay ball onto the boundary between the two sheets and
flatten it.
3. Slowly move the sheets away from each other. Watch out for any
changes in the clay. Stop the moment you see something happen.
4. Observe step by step what happens to the clay. Figure 1
Set-up B
1. Take two cardboard sheets and place them on the table roughly half a
centimeter away from each other.
2. Get a piece of clay and roll it into a marble-sized ball.
3. Press the clay ball onto the boundary between two sheets.
4. Slowly move the sheets toward each other.
5. Observe what happens to the clay.
Figure 2
Set-up C
1. Place two cardboard sheets side by side on the table.
2. Make a clay ball and flatten it along the boundary of the two sheets.
3. Get some clay of another color and make three thin stripes. Press
these on the surface of the flattened clay.
4. Slowly move one of the cardboard sheets toward you and the other
one away from you.
5. Observe what happens to the clay.

Reminder:
Please take photos while performing this activity and send them thru my messenger or thru our group chat. You may also print a copy of your
photos in A4 size bond paper and attach this in your LAS. Thank you! Page 1 of 4

Learning Task No. 4: Divergent boundaries occur along spreading centers where plates are moving apart and
new crust is created by magma pushing up from the mantle. Divergence of plates comes in two forms: oceanic-
oceanic divergence and continental-continental divergence.
1. Analyze the photographs of rift valleys (topmost pictures) and oceanic ridges (below), and answer the
questions that follow.

KEY TO CORRECTION
Learning Activity 5 – THE PLATE BOUNDARY MODEL
Learning Task No. 1
Q1. What happened to the clay as you slowly move the cardboard sheets away from each other?
The clay stretched and then formed a crack as I moved the cardboard sheets away from each other.
Q2. What happened to the clay as they were pushed from opposite ends?
The clay formed folds and bumps as they were pushed from the opposite ends.
Q3. What happens to the clay as you perform Set-up C?
The clay in Set-up C formed a crack. The thin strips of formed a wave.
Q4. What does the clay represent in the three set-ups?
The clay represents the Earth’s lithosphere and/or plates.
Q5. What geologic processes/events do you think might form or occur out of these plate movements?
The following geological events might occur in the following plate movements:
a. Moving away from each other (known as divergent plate boundary) can cause shallow earthquake
activity; volcanic activity in the form of fissure eruptions; creation of new seafloor and a widening
ocean basin.
b. Moving towards each other (known as convergent plate boundary) can produce earthquakes, volcanic
activity, mountain ranges and crustal deformation.
c. The grinding action between the plates at a transform plate boundary results in shallow earthquakes,
large lateral displacement of rock, and a broad zone of crustal deformation.
Learning Task No. 2
Types of Boundaries Figure Describe each type of plate boundary
a. During the collision of two continental plates,
the plates get compressed and neither is
Continental- subducted.
continental b. There is no subduction process occur in this
Convergent Plate convergence.
Boundary c. The crust tends to buckle and be pushed
upward causing formation of mountain ranges
and other highlands.
a. This is a collision of two oceanic plates.
b. The subduction causes some of the rocks above
the subduction zone to melt that leads to
Oceanic-oceanic
formation of underwater volcanoes.
Convergent Plate
c. This convergence also gives rise to the
Boundary
formation of trenches and generates shallow
intermediate or deep earthquakes and
sometimes causes tsunami.
a. This is characterized by the collision of an
oceanic and a continental plate.
Oceanic-continental
b. The plate of the oceanic crust dives beneath the
Convergent Plate
continental plate due to subduction.
Boundary
c. Risen arcs, trenches or underwater volcanoes
form on the plate of the Earth's crust.
