MODULE 1
CSU Vision The expression ”Route Surveying” used in a very general sense can be applied to the surveys required
to establish the horizontal and vertical alignment for transportation facilities. In the most general case, the

years, highways have been the most highly developed form of transportation facility in the overall network. As a
result, route surveys for highways are well defined and widely practiced. Most of the methods that have been
developed for highway surveys are equally applicable to the other specified means of transport. Consequently,

production and extension.
At the end of the session, learners of this program are expected to:
a. Execute reconnaissance survey to gather initial data needed for the project.
b. Execute the survey procedures for route alignment.
c. Gather all survey data that maybe needed to execute the design for a particular project specifically for road
construction.
Definition of Terms
Route Survey- a survey for determining the route of a proposed pipeline, power line, cable, road or
other linear facilities in order to acquire a right of way, servitude or easement from the property owner being
crossed. This term is also known as Engineering Surveys.
Control Survey- is referred to as the determination of the precise position of number of stations which
are distributed over a large area.
Horizontal control surveys are surveys over extensive areas generally established latitudes and
longitudes of stations.
1. Control by Traversing- series of horizontal distances and directions are observed to connect points
whose positions are to be determined.
2. Control by Triangulation- consists of networks of geometric figures with almost all of the angles
measured directly in the field with relatively few sides measured.
3. Control by Trilateration- the lengths of the sides of a series of triangles are measured and the angles
are computed from the lengths.
1. Reconnaissance Survey.
a. General routes are selected. Horizontal and vertical controls are established.
b. Report is made by accompanying sketches and reconnaissance map.
2. Preliminary Survey.

4. Construction Survey
a. Slopes for construction works are staked, spiral are laid, lines and grades for tractor pavement
are defined.
b. Final plans are prepared, profile sections, as revised during construction.
