Summative Assessment No. 2.3

European Literature

Read the poem:

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

- William Wordsworth

DIRECTIONS: Respond critically to the following questions to process the poem.

1. What figure of speech was used in: “I wandered lonely as a cloud?” Explain.

The figure of speech used in the poem is Simile and Personification. Because the
poet makes a clear comparison between himself and a cloud in the first line: "I roamed
lonely as a cloud." Simile. A simile is a direct comparison between two items that uses
the words 'as' or 'like’ and personification is when a non-human thing has human
behavior.

2. What do the lines: “And then my heart with pleasure fills” and “And dances with the
daffodils” imply?

It implies that the person feels happy again when the memory of the flowers and
the lake comes to his mind.
3. What do the daffodils symbolize?
Daffodils are among the first flowers to bloom in the springtime, signaling the end
of winter. As a result, they are thought to symbolize rebirth and new beginnings, joy,
playfulness, survival, and beauty.

4. In five sentences, describe the emotions that the poet wants to establish in the poem.

By reading the poem, the first emotion I have noticed is being lonely. The author
stated that “I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills”. Next is
being blissful and happy. Wordsworth described his emotions by explaining that he is
lonely then afterwards, he became happy and blissful because look back on when he and
his sister came across a big area of daffodils on their walk. In my opinion, that is how
Wordsworth described the emotions in the poem.

5. Discuss in five sentences how William Wordsworth used his imagination in presenting
the idea of hope and happiness in the poem.

The poem is based on one of Wordsworth's own hikes in the English Lake District
region. He and his sister came across a big area of daffodils on their walk. These daffodils
have a long-lasting effect on the speaker in the poem, both in terms of the initial feeling
they produce and in terms of how the image of them returns to the speaker's thoughts
later. "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" is a classic Romantic poetry that brings together a
great idea such as imagination, humanity, and the natural world. William used his mind
creatively by in lining his imaginations to reality. With his imagination, He is able to create
characters that explore the audience's feelings by creating plays, which allowed the
audience to step in to a world where their fears are realized.
