LOAD TEST OF D.C. SERIES MOTOR 0/6

LOAD TEST ON
D.C. SERIES MOTOR

AIM:

 To conduct load test on DC series Motor and to find efficiency.

APPRATUS:-

Sl No Apparatus Name Apparatus Type Specification/ Makers Serial No

Range Name
1. Series Motor
2. Ammeter Digital (0-20)A
3. Voltmeter Digital (0-300)V

PRECAUTIONS:

 The motor should be started and stopped with load

 Brake drum should be cooled with water when it is under load.

PROCEDURE:

 Connections are made as per the circuit diagram.

 After checking the load condition, DPST switch is closed and starter resistance is gradually
removed.
 For various loads, Voltmeter, Ammeter readings, speed and spring balance readings are noted.
 After bringing the load to initial position, DPST switch is opened.

THEORY:
1. TORQUE – CURRENT CHARACTERISTICS:

We know that for DC motor

T I a . In series motor, before saturation  I a and hence at rated load.
T I a2
The above equation shown that the torque-current characteristics of a series motor will be
parabolic. When the iron core becomes magnetically saturated,  become almost constant, so that at heavy
loads.
T  I a
The above equation is a straight line. Thus torque-current characteristic of a DC series motor is initially
parabolic and finally becomes linear when load become large as shown in fig.

2. SPEED - CURRENT CHARACTERISTICS

The motor speed N for a series motor is given by

V  I a ( Ra  Rse )  Eb 
N  K  
  
I  I ( R  Rse ) is negligibly small in comparison with V.
At the low value of a the voltage drop a a
V
 N

1
N
Since V is constant 
In series motor the fields flux  is produced by the armature current flowing in the field winding
so that
 I a . Hence the series motor is variable flux machine. So
1
N
Ia
Thus, for series motor, the speed is inversely proportional to the armature (load) current. The
speed – torque characteristic is a rectangular hyperbola as shown in fig.

3. SPEED- TORQUE CHARACTERISTICS

The motor speed N for a series motor is given by
V   I a ( Ra  Rse ) 
N

V
N
And the torque equation is T  I and field flux  I a . So
2
a T . Thus speed-torque
characteristic of DC motor is a rectangular hyperbola as shown in fig.

PROCEDURE:-
1. Connect the circuit diagram as shown in Fig.
2. Switch ON the power supply and start the motor with help of two point starter.
3. Apply rated voltage to motor and gradually increase load (mechanical or break load) step by step.
4. Note down the voltage, current, force F1 and F2, speed N for every step.
5. Disconnect the motor from power supply.
6. Calculate the efficiency of motor and draw the above mention curves.

DISCUSSION:
1. How armature reaction affct the three characteristics of dc series motor?
2. Explain the nature of efficiency vs. load curve?
3. If the supply voltage is dropped by half, what is the effect on three characteristics?
4. What happen if suddenly load is removed from the motor?
