In the experimental determination of the calorific value of a liquid fuel having a

hydrogen content of 20 % , the following data were obtained:

Mass of liquid fuel = 0.598 gm,

mass of water = 1500 gm
Water equivalent of calorimeter = 500 gm
Rise of temperature of water = 3.0012 oC
Cooling correction = 0.062 oC
Mass of cotton used in igniting the oil = 0.007 gm
Calorific value of cotton = 16750 J/gm.

Determine the higher and lower calorific values of liquid fuel. Specific heat of water
may be taken as 4.1868 J/gmoC.

Observed temperature rise =3.0012 oC

Cooling correction = 0.062 oC
Corrected temperature rise = 3.0632 oC

Heat received by the water = mass x specific heat of water x change in temperature
Qw = m x Cp x ∆T
Qw = (mass of water + mass of water equivalent of calorimeter) x 4.1868 J/gmoC. x
3.0632 oC
= (1500 +500)gm x 4.1868 J/gmoC. x 3.0632 oC
Qw = 25650.0115 J

Heat given out by combustion of cotton

Qc = m x CC
= 0.007 gm x 16750 J/gm
Qc = 117.25 J

Heat given out by the combustion of liquid fuel = Qw - Qc

Qfuel = 25650.0115 J - 117.25 J
Qfuel =25532.7615 J

Through the formula for heat generated by the combustion of fuel, determine the
HCV
Qfuel =mfuel x High Calorific Value
25532.7615 J = 0.598 gm x HCV
25532.7615 J / 0.598 gm = HCV
HCV = 42696.92559 J/gm

Finding lower calorific value

LCV = HCV -( mass of steam formed x 2442)

LCV = 42696.92559 J/gm - (9 x percent hydrogen x 2442)
LCV = 42696.92559 J/gm - (9 x 0.20 x 2442)
LCV = 38301.32559 J/gm
