This document contains an assignment on compression members with 6 questions. The questions involve selecting steel sections to serve as columns, checking the design strength and stability of columns, and calculating the design strength and percent increase when reinforcing an existing column by welding channels. Steel grades specified include A992, A572, and A36, and both ASD and LRFD methods are used.

DATE SUBMITTED 1. A W21 x 111 is used as a compression member with one end pinned and the other end fixed against rotation but free to translate. The length is 3.75 m. If A992 steel (F y= 350 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) is used, what is the design strength for LRFD. Check also the stability of the column. 2. Select the lightest W section of A992 steel (F y= 350 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) to serve as a column 6.70 m long to carry an axial compressive service load of 445 KN dead load and 890 KN live load. Assume that the member hinged at the top and fixed at the bottom. Consider also local stability. Use LRFD. 3. A W12 x 65 of A572 steel (Fy= 350 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) is used as a compression member. It is 8 m long, pinned at each end, and has additional support in the weak direction at a point 3.65 m from the top. Can this member resist a service DL= 800 KN and a service LL= 1,420 KN? Use ASD. 4. Select the lightest W section of A36 steel (F y= 250 MPa and Fu= 400 MPa) to serve as a column 9.15 m long to carry an axial compressive service load of 220 KN dead load and 490 KN live load in a braced structure. The member is assumed pinned at top and bottom and in addition has weak direction support at mid-height. Consider also local stability. Use LRFD. 5. The rigid frame shown is unbraced. The members are oriented so that bending is about the strong axis. Support conditions in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the frame are such that Ky= 1.0. The beams are W16 x 57, and the columns are W10 x 100. A992 steel (F y= 350 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa) is used. The axial compressive service DL= 400 KN, and the axial compressive service LL= 490 KN. Determine the allowable axial compressive design strength of column AB. Use the stiffness reduction factor if applicable. Use ASD. 6. In order to reinforced a column in an existing structure, two channels are welded to the column as shown. F y= 350 MPa and Fu= 450 MPa for both the column and the channels. The effective Length with respect to each axis is 4.90 m. What is the design strength for LRFD? What is the percent increase in strength?
