INTRODUCTION
VERBAL/NONVERBAL DIMENSIONS

 Men think they should be “macho” in


language and action.
 Men use assertive words and expect to be
understood right away.

Women are expected to be non-



confrontational in their language,
especially with men.
 Women are supposed to talk only about
certain topics that are within the world
of women.
VERBAL/NONVERBAL DIMENSIONS

 Women can now be loud and


assertive (e.g. Juana

 Men can talk about their


feelings, even cry in public
VERBAL/NONVERBAL DIMENSIONS
Activity 1: State the following use verbal (V) or nonverbal (N)
dimension:
___1. A boy acting hurt after being hit by a ball during a sport
activity.
___2. A girl wink at a boy she likes.
___3. A father singing lullaby to a baby.
___4. A husband nagging his wife for staying out late.

___5. A girl screaming for help after she lost her balance and
slipped.
ORAL/WRITTEN DIMENSIONS

 Women are supposed to be indirect and


circuitous
 With access to mass media and social
media ---both reader and write– Filipino
women write beyond what was once thought
to be safe topics for women.
 Women can now speak with directness.


ORAL/WRITTEN DIMENSIONS
 Activity 2: State if the following use oral (O) or written (W)
dimension:

 ___1. Telling a “green” or risqué joke only to friends of the same


sex.

 ___2. A female teacher giving a lecture in class while perched on top


of the teacher’s table.

 ___3. An invitation letter from an exclusive all-male golf club.

 ___4. Nuns and priests delivering impassioned speeches in rallies.

 ___5. Sorority sisters talking to their counterpart fraternity


brothers.
FORMAL/INFORMAL DIMENSIONS

 Examples:
 1. Attire in job interview, women must tend
to be formal than man.
 2. A female teacher is a choice of students
than male teacher in disclosing their
problems.
 3. Addressing colleagues in workplace, male
bosses must be still addressed formally.
FORMAL/INFORMAL DIMENSIONS

 Activity 3: State if the following use formal (F) or informal (I)


dimension:

 ___1. A comedian and a comedienne emceeing a wedding reception with


boisterous hilarity.

 ___2. A teenage girl asking a teenage boy to a senior prom.

 ___3. A man asking a woman’s hand in marriage through a flash mob.

 ___4. Talking to older male relatives respectfully.

 ___5. Talking to older female relatives like one does to teenage


friend.
INTENTIONAL/UNINTENTIONAL DIMENSIONS

 1. Smiling may express different


emotions, not just happiness.
 a. a student smiling during an exam
may make the teacher think that the
exam easy, contrary, the smile may
mean nervousness.

 b. smiling a couple who passes by may


be misconstrued, the girl may take
offense and her boyfriend may just
beat you up.
INTENTIONAL/UNINTENTIONAL
DIMENSIONS
 Activity 4: State if the following use intentional (I) or unintentional
(U) dimension:

 ___1. Signing up to help a women’s livelihood project.

 ___2. Assigning the girls to sweep and the boys to polish the classroom
floor.

 ___3. A male student being too talkative during a class lecture by the
teacher.

 ___4. A female employee addressing all-male coworkers (young and old) as


“Sir”.

 ___5. Formulating a speech on feminist for an all-male audience.
