1. The old saying that the human person is composed of three parts- soul, body and
clothes is more than a joke. According to William James, why should you take care of
your clothes?
According to William James we should take care of our clothes because clothes reveal
who we are. It reflects our personal status and contribute to the formation and
maintenance of self-image.
2. The clothes you wear is one way to express who you are. Do you agree? Support your
answer.
Yes, because we dress the way we wanted and it’s our passion. As a form of self-
expression, fashion or the clothes we wear can make us feel empowered and more in
touch with our inner self. We can feel more confident if the clothes we are wearing and
the way we present ourselves matches up with our personality, identify and mood.
3. A person generally shows a different side of himself/herself to different groups.
A person generally shows a different side of himself/herself to different groups to fit in
and adapt to the situation or people he/she was in.
4. Is having different social selves to different groups not tantamount to developing split
personality or inconsistency?
Having different social selves to different groups not tantamount to developing split
personality or inconsistency because we need to fit ourselves according to people who
we are with and to the situation we are involve. People develop split personality or
inconsistency because of traumatic to them in their childhood.
5. William James concludes that the worst punishment imaginable would be a complete
ostracization from one’s fellows. Losing one’s nature as a being-for-others can be more
of a condemnation than any imprisonment. Do you agree?
Yes I agree, feeling like an outsider or being excluded can be really painful and is worst
punishment than any imprisonment. Whether it’s within our own families, our friendship
groups, or at work, most of us want to feel like we belong. Being part of the group was
an essential survival mechanism. As social beings, we need that sense of community to
feel safe. Feeling like an outcast even activates the same areas of the brain as physical
pain. It is worse than any imprisonment because you will fill alone from being excluded.
A battle with your own thoughts and emotion after being excluded is what makes it hard
than any imprisonment.
6. William James asserts that achieving a high level of understanding of our spiritual selves
is more rewarding than satisfying the needs of the social and material selves. Do you
agree? Why or why not?
Yes I agree, because it is for ourselves and no one can do it for us. The only one that can
understand our self is only us. People will always say things about us even if we do what they
want. Beside, being satisfied and feeling fulfilled are what we all ultimately strive for. It does not
matter if you do not satisfy the needs of the social and material selves as long as you satisfied
your spiritual selves because it is what more important. Spiritual wellness acknowledges our
search for deeper meaning in life. When we're spiritually healthy, we feel more connected to not
only a higher power, but to those around us. We have more clarity when it comes to making
everyday choices, and our actions become more consistent with our beliefs and values and that
is what makes it more satisfying.
FOR REFLECTION
Like William James, would you want to make a difference in this world? How?
Yes. In today's world, a lot can be said about making a difference. People who believe that they
can make a difference are the people who shape our society today. Those individuals have
helped us in bettering the world we have today. Making a difference was just as important over
a hundred years ago as it is today. It is important to keep in mind that one person can and has
made a difference. I have, for the majority of my life, lived a sheltered life, and have never
realized how corrupt our society really was. Our nation has, in some ways, proved to be without
moral. In fact, the entire world is based on "the rich get richer" theory. I, for one want to change
that. I want to be a government official that supports morality, understands the people, and truly
unites the nation. I want everybody to have the opportunity to live a decent life that is not limited
by his or her financial situation, race, or background. I want to be able to stop hate crimes,
terminate prejudice, and open up a new, more peaceful world. I understand that it would be
difficult to accomplish all that I would like to, but it all starts with small steps. Small steps can be
taken to accomplish big things. Anyone can make a difference, it just takes the right attitudes
and decisions.
FOR RESEARCH
Read the biography of William James- Which one strikes you most?
In the biography of William James the one that strikes me most is that even if his father was
permissive and liberal who wanted him to study science or philosophy he still persisted his
interest in painting which makes his father to permit him to formally study it. It strikes me most
since my parents also wants me to take different course before but I persisted that I wanted to
take BSBA. It makes me mesmerize about it and I was really inspired by his determination to do
what he wants in life even if there is a hurdles and make people to be in the same page as he
is.
