 A BRIEF HISTORY

a) Pre –Independence History &

Post Independence History

Dadu District was formed in April 1931 from Larkana and Karachi
District. It is situated on Right Bank of River Indus. The District takes its name from
Headquarter town. The District was amalgamating seven talukas & two sub-Divisions as
under:-
1. DADU SUB DIVISION 2. SEHWAN
SUB-DIVISION.

1.Taluka Dadu 5. Taluka Sehwan

2.Taluka Kakar 6. Taluka Kotri
3.Taluka Mehar 7.Mahal Kohistan
4.Taluka Johi
The first Collector of District Dadu was Rai Bahadur Jagat Singh.
The Collectorate building was constructed in 1931. The Local Board was made functional
from 18th April 1933 & its first President was Khan Bahadur Mohammad Parial Khan Kalhoro.
Historical significance of Dadu & its adjoining area (i.e.Sehwan, Johi
& Mehar etc) has been chiefly for two reasons one that they forward the border between
political domains of the rulers (of the state) of Sindh & Balouchistan. Second that Dadu has
been along the route of caravans travelling along the Indus. Khudabad Village of District
Dadu had remained the capital of Kalhora Dynasty as late as 1768 A.D. The popular trade
system was “Hundhi” in the District. The source of income was agriculture & cattle.
After Independence, the people belonging to Hindu community
migrated to India & their properties were given to Muslims who had come from India but
after some time they mostly sold out the same properties given to them in satisfaction of
their claims. Infact Dadu District developed after Independence.
The Indus Highway was also constructed after Independence. From 1991untill 14th
December 2004, Dadu remained the largest District of Sindh province where after it was
bifurcated and a new District Jamshoro was created on 13.12.2004. At present District
Dadu comprises four talukas i.e. Dadu, Johi, Mehar & K.N.Shah.

Law and Order.

Law and order situation in Dadu is better as compared to other Districts of Sindh. This is
due to the absence of the strong tribal systems as in other parts of Sindh like, Shikar Pur,
Kashmore, and Ghotki etc. Because in Dadu City people of different communities are living
together therefore this city is peaceful as compared to others interior regions.

Prior to Devolution, the Head of District was Deputy

Commissioner/District Magistrate. After devolution District Coordination has been made
Head of Group of officers of District Government the District Nazim is Head of District.
The Jurisdiction of Taluka & Taluka Nazim is the Head of Each Taluka Municipal
Administration. Each Union Council is similarly headed by Nazim of Union Council. The

Occupations

The majority of population of District Dadu is rural & they are involved in Agr: cultivation,
while towns are providing business opportunities to residents. The in habitants of Kheerthar
do farming while Mallah’s of Manchhar lake (Portion falling in taluka Johi) earns their
livelihood by fishing. Approximately 20% of the District population is serving in Federal &
Provincial Government.

Climate & Rain forecast:-

The Climate of District is intensively Hot about 45 Degree Centigrade in Summer and below
5 Degree Centigrade in Winter. The Climate is immensely conducive for the Agriculture,
which is main source of income of the population. The other peculiar feature of climate of
District is the Gorakh Hill range which has minus temperature in winter and mercury meter
remains below than 20 Degree Centigrade even in June and July.
 Extremely dry conditions prevail in Dadu with an annual rainfall of
139 mm (5.6 Inch) most of the rainfall (over 50 percent) comes in Monsoon months, July,
August and September. The rainiest months are July and August when 102 m.m. out of 139
m.m. of annual rainfall takes place. The western depressions bring relatively small quantity
of rainfall, 17 m.m. from December to March. High veritably of rainfall of rainfall (50-70
percent) is experienced and the rainfall comes in a few heavy showers.

 NATURAL RESOURCES

The District is rich in natural resources such as valuable stones & reservoirs of Gas &
Petroleum have been explored in taluka Johi. The B.H.P. Company established its installation
to secure Gas & Petroleum. Another Foreign company viz: ENI has also setup their base
station along border of Taluka Johi & Sehwan for the purpose.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

With the coordination and support of SMEDA a registered Chamber of Commerce is

functioning in Dadu District. Apart from Dadu Chamber of Commerce and Industries some
other associations of trade of different nature are also functioning in each main towns of
taluka of District Dadu.
 Agriculture.

The Agriculture land of Dadu District consists of three Zones: (i) Barrage Zone (ii) Sailabi

(River Spill in Kacho area) & (iii) Rainfall in Kachho area. The District is fed by Sukkur

Barrage. There are two main canals in District (i) Rice Canal (ii) Dadu Canal. The Irrigation

likewise other parts of province is Chief source of income of District Dadu. The all crops of

Kharif and Rabi are grown in District and such crops are wheat, Rice, Cotton, Sugarcane,

Maize, Barley, Pulses, Juwar, Bajra, Grams & Seasum. The total cultivated area of District is

1,93,779-0 acres.

MAIN OBJECT

AGRICULTURE EXTENSION WING

The objective of Agriculture Extension is divided in two portions.

1. Agriculture Extension Work.

2. Plant Protection.

1. AGRICULTURE EXTENSION WORK

The main function is to raise the production of various Agriculture

crops by adopting improved technology right from land preparation to harvesting advising,

proper application of Fertilizer, Irrigation and use of yielding seeds including selection of

the crops.

For this purpose from Field Assistants, Agriculture Officers, Deputy District Officers and

District Officers is doing all efforts to achieve goal of good production to make country

self sufficient in major crops like cotton, Paddy, Sugarcane, Wheat and Oil Seeds.

In this regard field days at the farmers field and trainings of field assistants has been

carried during both the seasons Rabi and Kharif in the District for example in every month

training of Field Assistants are to be scheduled @ each Taluka of the District and displayed

Zarai Cinemas shows at different places of District on the Instructions of Director General
Agriculture Extension, Sindh, to disseminate the latest technology of cultivation and

prevention the cotton crop and oil seed crops from pest diseases. The Department was

launched more wheat campaign to get the country self sufficient in the wheat food. District

Dadu has won the trophy and thresher in grow more programs.

1. PLANT PROTECTION WORK.

It is entire duty of Extension worker that is from field Assistants

to District Officers, Agriculture Extension to monitor the Pest scouting work in different

crops @ present cotton pest scouting work is going on. During the field visits every

Agriculture Officers is submitting his scheduled pest scouting farm in which he is bound to

watch the crop of concerned grower in his presence by getting his signature and advising

him about pesticide for controlling the Pest problems.

This scheduled work is also checked by Deputy District Officer

Agriculture Extension, District Officer of Agriculture and even also Executive District

Officer Agriculture this program is also being used in other crops like Paddy and Sugarcane,

Chilies, Onion etc.

The another work of Department is to provide quality pesticide and fertilizer to the

growers for getting maximum yields. For the effectiveness of this work Executive District

Officer, Agriculture, District Officer, Deputy District Officer Agriculture Extension are

notified pesticide & Fertilizer in inspection in their respective jurisdiction.

The Pesticide / Fertilizer inspectors take samples of product from different shops in their

areas before the witness and dealer and same is to be sent to the Provincial Laboratory for

analysis purpose.

If the product declared unfit the Inspectors initiate to lodge FIR against the culprits and

matter moved to the competent court of Law to the punishment under APO 1971 to the

accused.

Live Stock department is participated main role to provide the veterinary aid to the Live

Stock owners and Live Stock farmers in District and provide round the clock veterinary aid

to the sick and wounded animals through 40 veterinary institutions and door services

through mobile services to the far flung areas.

There is acute shortage of vaccines to achieve the Annual vaccination

target, the District Government is not provide the vaccine the same may be supplied by the

Director Animal Husbandry Sindh Hyderabad on cost of recovery basis.

FOREST.

Dadu is geographically & economically very important District. The total area

of Dadu District has now recently been reduced from 4,561,683.7 acres to its nearly 40%

due to creation of new District i.e Jamshoro. Now Dadu District has been confined to 04

Talukas which are Dadu, Johi, K.N Shah & Mehar.

 State Forests exist in Dadu & Mehar taluaks only. The total area of Forest

in Dadu District is 17534 acres which is only 1% of the total geographical area. The area is

under control & management of Sindh Forest Deptt: except Kandi Baghban Forest ( 1790.4

acrs) transferred to District Government.

POULTRY DEVELOPMENT.

The office Poultry Development Office Dadu was started by the Govt. in the year

1990 to provide New bread for Poultry increasing in Rural and Urban areas of the District Dadu.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The main purpose of poultry development activities in the rural areas was to

increase the production of rural poultry units which still contribute substantially to

the province over all production of eggs and poultry meat. In this case connection the

approach was:

1) To introduce better producing stock of chicken ( was compared to our native/Desi

Chicken /which could have under – scavenging condition and also accepted by the

people in place of the native chicken which were low-producing and low maturing.

2) To protect the rural poultry against deadly diseases through mass vaccination and

also providing diseases diagnosis and guiding on their treatment, prevention and

control measures to minimize losses caused by diseases and.

3) Educating the poultry keepers in modern Poultry raising techniques specially under

village conditions to obtain better production through the applications of proper

management and feeding principles etc.

4) To increase the per capital in take of animal proteins through increase production

and consumption of Eggs, Poultry Meat in the province.

5) To augment the family income of the rural and commercial poultry farmers by

improving and input efficiency.

6) To organize and conduct Research on various aspects of the poultry Industry,

namely feeding , diseases , management economics and marketing, breeding and

incubation etc.

7) To develop and training programme of farmers, graduates and Governments

officers/ officials working on Poultry.

8) To extend technical know-how to farmers, and other concerned with poultry

production either directly or through appropriate channels.

9) To provide support to the integrated rural poultry Development programmes in the

provide so as to ensure implementation and follow-up activities.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR IMPROVEMENT OF 29000

WATER COURSES IN SINDH.

The agriculture is Pakistan’s largest Single Sector of economy ahead of

manufacturing and accounts for 24% total GDP and have a most important source of foreign
exchange earning through export of Agriculture Commodities.
 The National Programme for Improvement of 29000 WaterCourses in Sindh
is under spear. Leading of worthy President of Pakistan water vision Mega Project for
development of agriculture Sector.
The objectives of the NPIW five-year plan are.

1. To minimize wastage of water occurring by seepage, spillage

and side linkage from poor conditioned water courses.
2. Increase in production by effective utilization of irrigation
water through improvement of water courses network and
strengthening farmers participation to improve their
capability for better management at the farm level.
3. To, improve low yields due to inefficient, improper and
inadequate use of water on crops.
4. Scheme is covering total are a approximately 1 million hec: in
Sindh and 0.08 million hectors in Dadu district and
benifarries population of about 1 million in Sindh & 70000 of
District Dadu.

Other Business Opportunities in District Dadu.

District Dadu is a very backward district of Sindh but all business activities are very high.
In District Dadu a very large number of people are doing jobs and businesses in foreign
countries like Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Canada, U.S.A., U.K. etc. and they are investing their
earnings in their home country through different businesses. Their relatives are running all
these businesses. Agriculture and livestock and related projects of both sectors are the
major businesses of the region. The District is rich with natural resources such as valuable

viz: ENI has also setup their base station along border of Taluka Johi & Sehwan for the
purpose.

In Dadu there many registered and unregistered business related associations are working.
Rice, Diary farming, Goat and Sheep farming, poultry farming, peeshban making and
handmade products are the major business sectors of the district. Rice mills, flour mills, ice
mills, ginning Industries are the main industry of Dadu.

Some potential business sectors.

Manchar Lake.
Lake is the biggest natural lake in Asia. When it is in full capacity it
covers an area of 259 square kilometers at its maximum and when it
shrinks, it covers an area of 52 square kilometers at its minimum. Apart
from being storage of fish, it is also a source of water irrigating
about 20,000 to 25, 000 acres of land. The other important lake is
Ganero about 16 kilometers from Mehar.
These both lakes can become an important source of incomes of local community if
Government take interest for the development of both lakes and convert both lakes into
entertainment points for local and foreigner visitors.
In this way the local people can generate their livelihood through starting businesses.

Gorakh Hill Station.

Gorakh is an under-Development Hill Statation of Sinndh. It is situated at an elevation of

5688 Ft. in the Kirthar Mountains Range's Sindh Segment, 93-km north west of Dadu city.
Gorakh Hill Station is situated on one of the highest Plateaus of [[Sindh], spread over 2500
acres, and due its surroundngs, a unique adventure point for nature lovers.

Gorakh Plateau also serves as gateway for the villagers of Khuzdar District, Balochistan,
who come over to the village, Wahi Pandi, in Sindh's segment of Kirthar, about a third way
downhill from Gorakh Hill Station... for purchasing food and other Utilities.

The Gorakh Hills summit can only be reached with 4x4 vehicles, which are available from
Dadu and Johi towns. The hilltop is 93 km from Dadu. The last small town before the Gorakh
Hill is Wahi Pandi, settled in the lap of the Kirthar range. The road thereafter is towered
slowly at the milestone of 53 km when one enters the Yaroo Pass (Yaroo Sain Jo Luck).

Like Manchar Lake and Ganero its also an important point for tours and visitiors if
government take keen interst in for the development of Gorakh it can become a tourist
destination in Summer like Maree, Ziarat and other areas of Pakistan.

Through starting different buisness related activities by the government the local
inhabitants can generate their livlihood and it will help in decreasing unempolyment and
poverty in the very backward district of Dadu.

Handmde products.

District Dadu is very famous in all over the country due to its beautiful and cultural
handmade products. Because Dadu is a very backward region and due to the shortage of
water especially in Kachoo (rain fed area where water comes in rainy seasons only) and
mountainous areas of Dadu the major source of income of the people is Livestock and making
different products with their hands. The artisans who are working in the cluster having lot
of skills and they are very talented. They are also very hard workers and dedicated. The
major products due to which the cluster is famous are Sindhi Caps, Relies, Sindhi dresses,
different decoration pieces and traditional tuck work and peach work.

History and Background

The handmade cluster of Sindh is centuries old. In the old ages the Kings, Rajas,
Maharajas used these traditional dresses, relies, hand fans and other handmade
products for personal and ornamental purposes of their palaces.
Through the historical tales, books and other sources it is found that the armies of
different states of Sindh were using relies and other designed products as secret maps for
the areas of their enemies. Sindhi Caps, relies and other cultural and traditional products
being used as a sign of their culture and tradition since centuries. The artisans who are
working in this cluster learnt about the products from their elders and transferred it to the
next generations.
The artisans were making only those products that they learnt from their elders. After 80’s
when the N.G.Os. entered in this cluster then the people came to know about some
other products and designs but at limited scale. When Government took interest in the
different clusters of the country in 2005 and AHAN established, the artisans of Dadu
gained a lot of knowledge about different handmade the products of National and
International standards through the country’s famous and world class fashion designers
of the country. AHAN created training and products development opportunities for the
cluster and introduced Dadu’s handmade products in National and International
Market.
