Stonehaven Inc.: Prepared by FAS-34: Working Group AH1

(i) For a 100-pair batch: Cutting capacity is 905.66 pairs/day, MLT is 53 minutes/batch. Stitching capacity is 320 pairs/day, MLT is 3000 minutes/batch. Lasting capacity is 322.75 pairs/day, MLT is 148.72 minutes/batch. (ii) For a 40-pair batch: Cutting capacity is 172.66 pairs/day, MLT is 27.8 minutes/batch. Stitching capacity is 320 pairs/day, MLT is 300 minutes/batch. Lasting capacity is the same as for a 100-pair batch.

Case Analysis

Prepared by FAS-34: Working Group AH1

21F610 – Aubhropratim Manna

21F628 – Karan Bagga

21F630 – G Manasa

21F632 – Nakulesh Vijayvargiya

21F649 – Samarth P Das

Batch: 2021-23
Q1. For this part of analysis, consider each department in the Gdansk factory “in isolation” –
that is, when doing the calculations, imagine for the moment that the rest of the production
system has no impact on the department you are considering. For the purposes of
calculations, material handling times may be assumed to be negligible, and you can ignore
variability in processing times. Also, it can be assumed that the leather sheets are
simultaneously released to the three stamping machines in the cutting department. Please be
sure to show your work and state your assumptions.

a) For the typical 100-pair batch, what is the daily capacity and manufacturing lead time
(MLT) for a steady state process, within each of the following departments :(i) Cutting (ii)
Stitching (iii) Lasting?

b) If the batch were size were reduced to 40 pairs, what would be the daily capacity and
MLT for a steady state process, within each of the following departments: (i) Cutting (ii)
Stitching (iii) Lasting?

a)

● Cutting Cycle time (Batches/day): 9.06, Capacity (Pairs/day): 905.66

Batch cycle time: 53 (Min/Batch)

Average WIP=.35 batches

Average Manufacturing Throughput Time= Batch cycle time= 53 minutes/batch

● Stitching (Hint: Use Little’s Law)

Cycle time (Batches/day): 3.2, Capacity (Pairs/day): 320

Batch cycle time: 150 (Min/Batch)

Average WIP=20 batches

Average manufacturing throughput time per batch: cycle time*WIP=150*20=3000 mins

● Lasting Cycle time (Batches/day): 3.23, Capacity (Pairs/day): 322.75

Batch cycle time: 148.72 (Min/Batch)

Average WIP=.99 batches

Average manufacturing throughput time per batch= Batch cycle time= 148.72 minutes/batch
Cutting Cycle time (Batches/day): 17.27

Capacity (Pairs/day): 172.66

Batch cycle time: 27.8 (Min/Batch)

WIP=1 batch

Average manufacturing throughput time per batch= Batch cycle time= 27.8 minutes/batch

● Stitching (Hint: Use Little’s Law)

Cycle time (Batches/day): 32,

Capacity (Pairs/day): 320

Batch cycle time: 15 (Min/Batch)

WIP=20 batches

Average manufacturing throughput time per batch

Q2. Now consider the factory as a system and take into account interactions between the
departments. Please be sure to show your work and state your assumptions.

a) Assuming production is done in 100-pair batches, what is the factory’s daily capacity?

b) What is the total MLT for a 100 pair batch?
