Textbook: Physics for Scientists and Engineers (9th edition), 2014, by Raymond Serway and John
Jewett.
Learning objectives: This course is designed to provide an overview of calculus based intro-
ductory physics, which is a requirement for all undergraduate engineering students. The scope
of this course is to provide a base touch of the following topics:
1. Oscillatory Motion
2. Wave motion
3. Superposition and Standing Waves
4. Ray optics
5. Image formation
Learning outcomes: A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements will have
demonstrated an ability to:
1. Analyze simple harmonic motion and apply it to spring-mass and simple pendulum oscilla-
tion.
2. Understand the mathematical description of a mechanical wave.
3. Apply the superposition principle to understand standing waves on a string and in air tubes.
4. Understand the laws of ray optics.
5. Apply the laws of optics to spherical mirrors.
Grading scheme: There will be 2 exams and a final with the following weight:
Exam-1 28 %
Exam-2 28 %
Final 35 %
Participation assessed by assignments 9%
Participation grade (9%): Will be partially on attendance and participation in live sessions,
and partially on the submission of the practice assignments before each exam.
Missing exam: There will be makeup exam if you have a valid excuse according to LIU rules
and regulation. After approval of the exam petition, you will be given a makeup exam with a
maximum grade of 80% or 100% of the total exam grade.
Responsibilities:
- Screen recorded material and its pdf will be uploaded twice a week.
- We will have one live session each week as office hour through which students can ask
about any unclear material.
- Students must read the chapters and work out all assigned problems in the booklet*. Un-
derstanding and working out problems is essential for passing the course. It is strongly rec-
ommended for students to be up to date in studying the textbook lectures and class notes
and doing corresponding problem sets mentioned below.
*You will be given a booklet of problems taken from textbooks and selected problems from previous
exams with detailed solutions. These problems booklet would be sent to you by e-mail. Working out
these problems is very crucial to be well prepared and do well on the exams.
