Student Handbook

The English Mahdara

Version 1.0
Released on July 19, 2020

1 of 8

With the name of Allāh ‫ﷻ‬. All praise is due to Allāh ‫ ﷻ‬- The Lord of the worlds.
And may His peace and blessings be upon the most honorable messenger,
his family, companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the
Day of Judgement.

Congratulations on becoming a student at the English Mahdara. It is only by

the grace of Allāh that He has given us tawfīq to partake in the seeking of
sacred knowledge. Verily, actions are only rewarded with a righteous niyyah
(intention); the intention with this handbook is to provide guidance for students
in their search of sacred knowledge, for the sake of Allāh and to attain His riḍā
(pleasure).

We will update the Student Handbook continuously and notify students

whenever we release a new version, in shā’ Allāh.

Where should I begin?
I want to learn primarily Arabic
Priority: 1. Al-Ājrūmiyyah. 2. Iḍā’at al-Dujunnah. 3. Qurrat al-Abṣār.

You should begin with al-Ājrūmiyyah and focus on understanding the content
of these lessons. Download the matn (manuscript) we provide and spend time
on understanding it while taking the lessons. You may also try to translate some
of the words.
We have decided to hire a teacher to aid you in learning Arabic. The teacher
will be an Ustādh based in the US, who has previously taught Arabic grammar
and other sciences at various madrasas. He will in shā’ Allāh do 2 live sessions
every week on zoom. The lesson duration is approximately 90 minutes per
session. All enrolled students are welcome to join. We will also record the
lessons and upload them, for those who cannot join live.

Please make sure you have voted your suitable day and time through doodle.
We will announce the times through e-mail and on the Student Homepage.

Parallel with al-Ājrūmiyyah and the live sessions, we recommend you take both
Iḍā’at al-Dujunnah and Qurrat al-Abṣār. This will expand your vocabulary and
train your brain in Arabic. After we finish al-Ājrūmiyyah, we will continue with
Matn Qaṭr al-Nadā wa Balli al-Ṣadā in grammar (depending on votes).

I want to take all courses
Priority: 1. Iḍā’at al-Dujunnah. 2. Al-Ājrūmiyyah. 3. Qurrat al-Abṣār.

You should begin with Iḍā’at al-Dujunnah and focus on understanding the
content of these lessons. In the beginning, you may be introduced to many new
terms. It may take time to comprehend – we recommend you take thorough
notes and try to structure the terms/categories on your own (i.e. the categories
the scholar mentions, the types of attributes, etc.).
Parallel with Iḍā’at al-Dujunnah, we recommend you follow the courses in al-
Ājrūmiyyah and partake in the live sessions. Learning Arabic is essential for
further studies and advancing to higher courses/books later. You may also
study Qurrat al-Abṣār.

Translations
All the lessons on the English Mahdara contain subtitles. The subtitles consist
of:
1. A translation of the matn (manuscript)
2. The sharḥ (commentary) by the scholar
3. Any additional notes to elaborate on words or meaning

During translation, we have focused especially on the Arabic language, to

support the students in learning Arabic.

Besides the subtitles, there may be separate notes in a google doc, which can
be found inside the course. These notes are updated regularly as we release
more lessons in the respective course. Whenever we update these notes, we
will notify students via the “News” section on the Student Homepage. You may
read the notes before you start the lesson. We recommend following the matn
(manuscript) of the book and taking your own notes while taking the lessons.
This will help you remember the content better and train your brain to become
more accustomed to reading the Arabic mutūn (manuscripts). Download the
available manuscripts here.

It is very common to pause the lesson many times, skip back 10 seconds and
play again, to watch the same lesson several times, etc. to comprehend
everything the scholars teach. The important thing is to understand the subject
being taught, as rushing through it may lead to misunderstandings or having
voids in the foundation.

become available before we reach the end of the first courses.

Questions & Contact
When you go to the Student Homepage, you can click “Questions & Answers”.
This will take you to our new ticket platform. It’s optional to create a user. When
you create a ticket, make sure to use the e-mail you use on the Mahdara.

You will find a few FAQ’s on the platform. This will be expanded and grow as
we go along. If you cannot find the answer to your question, you can create a
ticket.

If you have a question regarding the course, choose the respective course.
Please make sure the question is clear. We will do our best to translate the
questions and pass them on to the scholars. If you know Arabic, you can write
the question in Arabic.

With the tawfīq of Allāh
