MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO MULTIGRADE TEACHING
Lesson 1: THE MULTIGRADE PROGRAM IN PHILIPPINE EDUCATION
A. Introductory Activity My thoughts about the picture: 1.) It practice the multigrade education method where a teacher conducts classes to primary students of multiple grade level in a single room. 2.) I noticed that it is challenging when it comes to the classroom management. In the picture, four students on the side are raising their hands and the other one is not literally active but, also listening to their teacher. 3.) Teacher need to have more activities or energizer for the active participation of the class. As I noticed in the picture, if you are becoming or future multigrade teacher, you need to be well oriented, hardworking, effortless, and creative. Because the case there is not just one grade level, it is focus on the situation where you can experience teaching mixed grade level. Different attitude, behavior, and abilities of the learners. B. Content/Discussion Questions: 1. Which of the given scenarios describe a multigrade school? Why? For me, the first scenario describes the multigrade school. As the first scenario said, the term remote area is important policy option for providing access to education for learners in remote areas multi-grade teaching needs to be recognized as such and be given the attention it deserves. But I think the scenario 2 is more realistic in terms of place like Balabac can be found far across the city of Puerto Princesa City. 2. Based on your answer in question #1, what is a multigrade school? Based on my answer in question #1, the multigrade school can be defined as schools where groups of students of different grades are taught in a single classroom. In most cases, in a multigrade school or classroom pupils of two or more grades are taught by one teacher. Multigrade school are considered to play an important role on providing access to education for all in remote, isolated and underdeveloped rural areas. 3. Are the situations about real in the Philippine setting? Is the practice rational? Why? In my own opinion, it is a yes. Because here in Palawan, Puerto Princesa City. The multigrade method education is very applicable in terms of the learning outcomes of the students. It is applicable to schools located in mountainous areas where school teachers are scare and are forced to teach many grade levels simultaneously. Balabac is very far to the city and the situation there is very sad not literally but figuratively. I don’t underestimate their kind of learning but, I used the term I believe in their teaching method or education their and also to the teachers who assigned in Balabac, they do their job with passion and love. Balabac is the place where there’s no direct connection from Balabac to Puerto Princesa City. It is the end of the Palawan South. Reflection Activity (4-stanza poem) You want to be in a gang And shoot up everything with a bang You say they'll have your back But education is what you lack
Education is the key to life
And not getting stabbed with a knife Education will lead you to great heights And not to everyday fights
Education will help you excel
Not lead you to a county jail You won't find yourself doing ten In any county pen
Or being charged with first degree murder
In a court of order And as your family wail You're getting life without bail
Be in a gang and stay there for keeps
You'll find yourself underground six feet deep So instead of being laid to rest Get an education and be the best.
