1. Before this course, my writing was adequate, so I thought. I came into this course
thinking I would be able to easily write papers in any way I wanted to, but after the first
assignment I realized that was not how it was going to go. Before the first assignment I
learned a lot about the technical writing aspects. One of the biggest aspects I learned was
incorporating and targeting a specific audience in my papers without saying who that
specific audience is. This changed my vocabulary in my writing which made me expand
my knowledge on words and punctuation. One other big aspect that I changed in my
writing is writing in plain language. Once I first heard the term, I did not know it was
pretty much as self-explanatory as it sounds. I was easily able to incorporate this aspect
into my writing. One area that I feel like I did not improve my writing in is formatting.
My formatting coming into this course was basic and plain, and after the last paper I did
not see much of a difference, and this could have come from me not paying attention
enough. A more detailed PowerPoint or lecture about formatting would have helped me
more and could possibly help others in a future class.
2. When I sighed up for this course, I was expecting to learn how to better my writing skills
in the construction industry, but in the construction industry the main form of writing is
mostly emails and, in this class, there is only one assignment that deals with emails or
memos. Since I did not complete the one assignment that could have helped me, I did not
reach my goal. Not doing that one assignment hurt me in two ways: it hurt my grade with
it being a big assignment and it hurt me in not reaching my goal. There really is not a way
for the professor to change the course to help other students meet the same goal because
it is an English class and not a major specific class. The professor could take a poll at the
beginning of the class to see which major the students are taking the class for. With the
knowledge of which majors are in the class, the professor could break the class up into
groups based on the major of the student and have a set of assignments tailored to each
group. For example, students in an English major would not be doing the same
assignments as students in the Construction Science and Management major and vice
versa.
3. An assignment that I am proud of is my instructions packet assignment. I was able to
incorporate a very essential but easy life skill into the assignment. Although the
assignment took me a while to thank of, I was able to quickly get it done with a good
grade. If I could add any assignment, I would want to add an assignment that would have
helped me more in my major, such as another email assignment that explains how to have
a back-and-forth conversation about a product or service. If I could edit any assignment, I
would take out the story sphere assignment because I still have no clue what the purpose
of that assignment was besides the fact of me being confused by it.
This class was a very information class for me even if it did not specifically help me with my
major. I would recommend this class to others that find the joy of different writing aspects
and improving in the writing area.
