The Tmportance of English in Civil Engineering to Reach the International Community

All over the World, both in industrial countries and developing countries, English is the
second language of their native language. Apart from being their second language, English is
also the second most spoken language after Chinese. English has also become a reference for
several scientists or researchers to write their findings or scientific articles. Therefore, to become
an international community one of the keys is to understand and master English. To master
English, we must understand what the components are in the language, namely listening,
reading, speaking and writing.
The importance of reading literacy is characterised by the placement of reading as a

subject at school and in the university curriculum. Reading literacy is important in the context of
self-improvement, personal branding, professional development, schooling, and national
development. Literate people are one of the primary capitals in national development.
(Rintaningrum, 2019)
Listening is a vital primary stage of language acquisition. If students do not listen or learn
to listen well, then the latter stages of the complex pattern of language acquisition within a
productive framework (in other words, Speaking and Writing) in the communicative classroom
will be difficult. This study documents a number of perspectives on why listening in English is
difficult for foreign language learners. Listening in this study means when students have
listening practice, for example listening to the dialogue, monolog, or long conversation.
Moreover, students find it difficult when they have listening test with similar types of the
listening practice above.(Rintaningrum, 2018)
Proficiency in English is also important, especially for us international program students

because we use English in lecture lessons and also in conversations with lecturers or in class
discussions. In addition, later we will also carry out a student exchange or joint degree program
where we will interact with students and lecturers in that country. Of course, in interacting often
use English, therefore English is very important.
Besides the importance of proficiency in English, being good at writing essays, scientific
articles, or scientific papers in making a work in English, of course, must use the correct
vocabulary as well as the right grammar. The correct use of vocabulary and grammar is a
requirement of a scientific article or scientific work.
English is the most important thing to become an international community because a lot
of scientific papers, especially in the fields of civil engineering such as structures, hydrotechnics,
geotechnics, and others, use English.
At this time the world is entering industry 4.0 which will face industrial automation.
humans are also needed to develop in order not to be defeated by this modernization, especially
for us as students majoring in civil engineering. the most important thing is mastery of the
international language, namely English. As a civil engineer, if you want to collaborate with
international companies or work in multinational companies, you must master English.
The opportunity to get a more decent job is wide open. By having the ability to speak in
two languages, of course this will be an added value for us. In addition, we will also be able to
get a career at an international level if our English language skills are very good. Nowaday
English, seems very difficult. Therefore, English has a very high value in the eyes of the world.
If we master English, it means we have grasped a great opportunity to get a job in every country
on earth. English is an international language that is certainly used by all people in the world. So,
when we master English, of course we will be able to adapt and chat with anyone easily when we
move from country to country. By mastering a language which is actually the most common
language in the world, this is of course our main asset to expand our interactions throughout the
world.
Having knowledge in English is one of the greatest assets at the professional level in
developing our careers. That is one of the important reasons why we have to learn English. This
is because the progress of the world economy which is increasingly globalized and the
interaction with people from various corners of the world is one of the important things that is
very valuable to do. To advance our careers, of course we must be able to establish relationships
with other companies. Whether a career in any field that uses a foreign language such as
government, traveling, education, communication, law, advertising or the economy. Our ability
to master English will certainly lead us to communicate and establish relationships with
companies from various fields.
The conclusion is that understanding English is an important thing. mastering English

will make us more developed in terms of science and communication as well as advancing our
careers or education by studying abroad. Understanding English is as if we understand half of the
world, because English is the language with the second most users.
