SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING

POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
for Mathematics Grade 10
Quarter 2 / Week 2

1
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide in solving problems

involving polynomial functions. It will be your aid as you enrich and
apply your existing knowledge about polynomial functions.
In this learning kit, the learners will gain knowledge in solving
problems involving polynomial functions. In all its examples, you are
given the opportunity to use your prior knowledge and skills in solving
word problems and to process the knowledge and skills learned so
that you will be able to deepen and to transfer your understanding
about the different lessons on polynomial functions being discussed.
This kit is aligned with the Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) of
the Department of Education following the prescribed Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELCS).
It has the following features proven to be valuable aids to
learning Mathematics even at home:

I. What Happened
This section contains items that serve as a review on illustrating
polynomial functions and on understanding and describing the
graphs of polynomial functions. It also contains items that will gauge
the student’s prior knowledge about solving problems involving
polynomial functions.

II. What You Need To Know

This section presents different examples of word problems
involving polynomial functions and the steps or discussion on how to
solve them. This would help the learners connect to real-life
situations.

III. What Have I Learned

This section will evaluate the learners’ skills and competence in
solving problems involving polynomial functions.

2
OBJECTIVES:
K: Recalls the concepts learned about polynomial functions.
S: Solves problems involving polynomial functions.
A: Appreciates the significance of polynomial functions in solving
real-life problems.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
The learner solves problems involving polynomial functions.
(M10AL-IIb-2)

I. WHAT HAPPENED

Hi! I’m Teacher Dariel. In this module,

you will learn different examples of word
problems involving polynomial functions.
I know you are already excited on how
you can apply the different concepts
you learned about polynomial functions.
But before that, I want you to answer first
the PRE-ACTIVITY of which some of the
items serve as a review and some serve
as pre-test to gauge your prior
knowledge about the new lesson.

3
PRE-ACTIVITY:
Directions: Read the following items very carefully. On your
notebook, write the necessary solution and the letter of the correct
answer.

1. What is the leading coefficient of the polynomial function

?
A. 3 B. -2 C. 6 D. 2

2. What should be the value of so that will define a

polynomial function?
A. zero C. a real number
B. a fraction D. a nonnegative integer

3. Which of the following is a polynomial function?

A.
B.

D.

4. Rewrite in standard form.

A.
B.
C.
D.

5. What is the factored form of ?

A.
B.
C.
D.
4
6. What are the zeros of ?
A. C.
B. D.

7. What are the end behaviors of the graph of

?
A. The graph rises to the left and falls to the right.
B. The graph falls to the left and rises to the right.
C. The graph falls to the left and also falls to the right.
D. The graph rises to the left and also rises to the right.

8. If the volume of a box (in cubic inches) can be expressed as

, find the height if the length is
inches and the width is inches.
A. inches C. inches
B. inches D. inches

9. Your younger brother is a Grade 10 student. One of his projects in

Mathematics 10 for the 1st Quarter is to sketch the graph of
in an illustration board and you
noticed him having a difficulty in making the project. You know
that the easiest technique is the Leading Coefficient Test. So that
you can help your brother, what will you give him as a clue?
A. The graph falls to the left and rises to the right.
B. The graph rises to the left and falls to the right.
C. The graph rises to the left and also rises to the right.
D. The graph falls to the left and also falls to the right.

10. The population of a city years from now can be modeled by

the function . What will be the
population of the city six years from now?
A. C.
B. D.

5
II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In your daily activities, you might have encountered
situations that are mathematical in nature. You might have been
prompted with real-life problems that are already involving with
polynomial functions of which you are just unaware.
Your skills in finding the zeros of polynomial functions and
dividing polynomials are significant in this section.

DISCUSSION

Example 1
Find the length of the box if the width is inches, the
height is inches and the volume in cubic inches can be
expressed as .

REMEMBER!
To solve word problem like the one above, all you have to do is to
follow the following steps:
1. Analyze the given problem very carefully and list down the
given data (known) and what is/are being asked (unknown).
2. Translate the verbal phrases into mathematical representations.
There are some word problems wherein the representations are
already provided, otherwise you will be the one to provide.
3. Write down the working equation.
4. Solve the equation.
5. Check your answer(s).
Solution
Step 1. Given:
width:
height:
volume:
What is asked (unknown): length

6
Step 2. Translate the verbal phrases into mathematical
representations. Note that the representations (width,
height, and volume) are already presented in the
problem.

width:
height:
volume:

Step 3. Write down the working equation.

Step 4. Solve the equation.

Note: You can divide the numerator by the

denominator one at a time.
So,

Then,

Therefore, the length of the box is inches. You

can also use Synthetic Division in solving this problem.

7
Step 5. Check your answer.

Remember that can also be written as

. Your answer is correct if is a factor of
, that is, . This is the
purpose of the Factor Theorem you already learned.

Since the function is equal to when you substitute

, then your answer is correct. Great job!

Example 2

A demographer believes that the population of a city

years from now can be modeled by the function
Four (4) years from now, what
will the population of the city be?

Solution

Therefore, 4 years from now, the population of the city is

23,784

8
Example 3
A factory is selling a certain type of machine and its profit
can be modeled by the function (in
pesos) and represents the number of machines sold. What is the
profit when there are machines sold?
Solution:

Therefore, the profit of the factory when there are

machines sold is pesos.

III. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED

EVALUATION/POST TEST
Directions: Read, analyze and solve the following items. Write
your solution and final answers in your notebook.

1. If the volume of a box (in cubic inches) can be expressed as

, find the length if the width is
inches and the height is inches.

2. The population of a city years from now can be modeled by

the function . What will be the
population of the city five years from now?

3. A department store is selling a product. Its profit can be

modeled by the function (in
pesos) where represents the number of products sold. If there
are 50 of the products sold, how much is the profit of the store?
