A MOVING EXPERIENCE TOWARDS MATURITY

INTRODUCTION

YOUR PRESENT STATUS

When you trusted Jesus as your personal Savior, God placed His Spirit in you.
You were born again spiritually and became a new born member of God’s family.
You are a new creation
 2Co 5:17 Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of
living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. (GW)
 Rom 8:15-16 You haven't received the spirit of slaves that leads you into fear
again. Instead, you have received the spirit of God's adopted children by which
we call out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we
are God's children.

YOUR NEXT STEP IS TO GROW.

1. Grow in your new life, like a new born baby
1 Pet 2:2Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may
grow up in your salvation
2. God is not finished with you yet, you are God’s project. So, we must be
conscious of God’s working to mature us daily
Phil 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will
carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus May God himself, the God
of peace, sanctify you through and through.
1Thes 5:23-24May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will
do it.

YOUR FUTURESTATE:
1. BECOMING LIKE CHRIST -- Rom 8:28-29And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according
to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to
the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

2. IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT CHRIST

Jer 13:23 Can an African change skin? Can a leopard get rid of its spots? So,
what are the odds on you doing good, you who are so long-practiced in evil?
(MSG)
Before your born-again experience, this was impossible because
a. You did not see the need to change -- Eph 4:17 "So I tell you this, and insist
on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the
futility of their thinking."
b. You did not know how to change – Eph 4:18b-19 "…because of the
ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all
sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in
every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more."
c. You did not have the power to change -- Rom 7:15 I don't realize what I'm
doing. I don't do what I want to do. Instead, I do what I hate.

3. NOW, WITH GOD’S SPIRIT IN YOU, IT IS POSSIBLE

a. No lifestyle or life-dominating sin is beyond God's power to forgive and
change. It is God’s work to change lives.
Luk 18:26-27 And the ones who heard said, and who can be saved? 27 And
He said, the things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
b. God does not only forgive us of our sins, but by His Spirit, frees us from the
control of sin in the present and enables us to live the Christian life.
Eze 36:27 And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My
statutes, and you shall keep My judgments and do them.
Phi 2:13 It is God who produces in you the desires and actions that please
him.

THE PROCESS OF GROWING TO BE LIKE CHRIST

1. God first gives us a New Nature (His Spirit within us)
2. God’s Spirit gives us the power to do His will.
3. God's Spirit also creates DESIRE in our hearts. Desire is the beginning of the
formation of new habits.
4. We nurture this desire and by submission and DISCIPLINE. This is the
process of “faith in action"
5. God enables us to endure and overcome, until we cross the point of DELIGHT.
6. What seemed to be difficult now becomes second nature -- something which
you do so often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it.
You have started training yourself to be godly.
7. You have formed godly habits that help you to grow to become like Christ. A
Habit is a pattern of behavior acquired through frequent repetition.

THE HABITS FOR GROWTH:

H-oly Spirit Living – The Walking Habit
A-ssembling Together – The Worshipping Habit
B-ible Feeding – The Word Habit
I-ntercessory Praying – The Weeping Habit
T-estifying to Others – The Witnessing Habit
S-tewardship Giving – The Wealth Habit

WHAT TO DO TO DEVELOP THE HABITS:

Join a growth group with whom you will study and help one another to practice
each of the Habit for Growth.
