Executive summary
This report is about the One-month internship program that we attended an Arsi university
Cisco Networking Academy and our experience and journey. And also the knowledge and the
skill set I developed during the internship. Another part of this report is about the project I
developed by using the problem solving skill in my internship. I briefly summarized what might
be expected while going through the report.

Chapter One:-In the first part of the report, it provides information about the Cisco
Networking Academy It starts from the brief history of the and also in this unit I will find the
missions and visions of the agency.

Chapter Two: - This chapter constitutes the overall internship experience. This include how
we get into the Cisco Network Academic, in which section I have been working in, how does
the flow in the section look like, what challenges I have been facing, what measure I have done
for these challenges and so on.

Chapter Three: - This chapter comprises the benefits of the intern in terms of improving
practical skill, upgrading theoretical knowledge, improving communication skill, and other
benefits are included.

Chapter Four: - This chapter mainly focused on the project I have done, this also included
abstract of the project, background of the project, objectives of the project both

general and specific objectives, literature review, scope of the project, problem statement

of the project, benefits of the project, result and discussion of the project.

Chapter Five: -This chapter is the last chapter and deals with conclusion and
recommendation

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Cisco Networking Academy AU
1.1.1. Brief history of the company
Arsi university Cisco Networking Academy the city was established to foster the social and the
economic development and building good governance in the city under the state. It is necessary
to produce a human resource having adequate professional knowledge and skill in the
information and communication technology. currently the quality information to be able to
provide their service provision in qualitative and speedy way through developing and expanding
the information and communication technology in the region the organization is re-organized
into the first four major vision/mission critical/oriented directorates and different supportive
directorates. These include:

 Network and software Development directorate

future is to see the city has rapid growth and developed ICT based Technology and become
active participant in world competition to the country. It also creates awareness and support in
expanding private companies in the city and see the people of Asella with enhanced altitude of
preparation and self-reliance in solving it development challenges by their own capacity

throughout and finally to realize sustainable socioeconomic development and democratic and

1.3. Mission of the company

Developing ICT in everywhere among the community of the region to improve their living
standard and Develop the support of ICT for the government and for the people of the nation.
Improving the ability of using information technology in the region & developmental faction and
optimize its contribution to the social and economic development of the region. Extensively,
within all the geographical locations ends to upgrade and improve the support delivered by
communication information technology to the people.

1.4. Products and services of the company

The agency provides different kinds of services efficiently and effectively for the satisfaction of
clients and consumers. The main services are: -

One of the main core processes of the agency is E-government and it has three different versions
within it.

CHAPTER TWO: OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

2.1. Objective of the internship

General objectives
The general objective primarily is to fulfill the Software Engineering (SE) Degree
requirement under the Faculty of Computing School, Jimma university institute of
technology and to develop the student’s practical skill from the student’s theoretical
knowledge that they Acquire from school and to get to know the work environment.

Specific objectives
 To develop practical knowledge interacting with theoretical knowledge
 To develop interaction with co-workers
 To develop problem solving skills.
 To learn to handle work pressure

2.2. How did I get into the company?

Our school has partnership and relations with different companies to give the students a
better work and internship experience. So as my internship time reached we contact with
Arsi university Cisco Networking Academy and given a chance to be interns there, and
fortunately. I was one of the students who were given the chance.

2.3. Work section

As the company I interned it works on different technologies in software, hardware, networking,
and much more. Because of this the company has many departments and work on different
sectors that are focused on software, hardware or networking and different sectors. The
department I worked at is called Website Design.

To explain little about Website Design refers: - it was to build a content management system
(CMS) website using the Joomla CMS that is an open source software. The project required
knowledge and skills in different areas of web development that was obtained during the work
placement and developing websites aside studies. In this project PHP language, MySQL

database, HTML language, CSS language was used to build website and modify code to suit the
requirement.

This website design is based on a title Arsi Zone Islamic Office at Cisco Networking Academy,
located in Asella as an Information Technology department and computer specialist. A side from
configuring computers and helping regular users with problems they encountered, I developed a
website to attract customers using the content management system. The goal of the project was
to build a website. The idea was that the information on the website would be visible to everyone
who wanted to see what the company offered and see people thoughts improving the service,
writing comments. The target users of the website are clients, students, local workers, and
tourists.

The main functionalities include an overview information, prices, social function, events
functions and question and answer function.

This Bachelor’s thesis focuses on the application of the Joomla content management system
(CMS), configuring PHP script language, MySQL database, Apache server, and a website
design. It also examines how a new person in web application development could get started and
construct and design the website with Joomla, as well as discusses major differences between the
most usable and open source CMS Joomla, Drupal and WordPress.

2.4. Work Tasks we have been Executing

Most of the time I was working on the section of website design development.

In general, the main tasks are:

 Identifying the problem on website design

 Reporting the problem on existing during website design creation.
 It is a tool that allows administrator to post news, post the new pages on the site

2.5. Procedures perform our work in company

For the achievement of my internship I used different approach as the hardness of the
project. Accordingly, the following procedure was used to overcome our problem and
lastly, I achieved my project in a good and best manner.

 First I gathered information about our task to do.

 Then I made some analyzes for the task.
 After this I have prepared our plan which include how and when to finish the task.
 Then I have implemented our assumed plan accordingly
 Lastly, I made a backward check mechanism to see how my work and plan going
on.

2.6. How good we have been in performing our work tasks

While I had been performing our internship project I used theoretical and practical skill
that I have possessed from our last 3 years. Generally, I main performance was on
website development and solves computer problems. I had also improved my individual
working skill.
Also to increase my confidence in problem solving, during work and get some
experiences of problem solving. These also encourage me to be punctual when
performing our tasks.

2.7. Major duties of the internship

The first focus of my duty is mainly related to my department’s work; that is on website
application development. The second focus of my work or focus is learning to be a full stack web
developer. Using the languages HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and the like. By working on
simple and small projects to have a better understanding of the concept of what we are
dealing with.
The website would provide information for visitors of a company and its services. To give a little
explanation about joomla website development open source software. Joomla is an open source
Content Management System (CMS), which is used to build websites and online applications.

It is free and extendable which is separated into front-end and back-end templates
(administrator). Joomla is developed using PHP, Object Oriented Programming, software design
patterns and MySQL (used for storing the data).

2.8. Challenges Faced and Measure Taken During Internship

A Coping with the New Lifestyle: Since we were recently a university students and now I am
getting into a new environment, getting used to a new lifestyle that can be quite challenging.
Instead of waking up in the morning and going to a few classes a day, we are working at the
company 7 to 5. The hours and the new living situation clearly make socializing more difficult
than before. And since I was leaving on my own at the time of the internship the life
responsibility itself got a bit higher than before.

Measure Taken: to make my life style and my schedule to fit with the new internship and work
life I rearranged my schedule and my daily routine. Then the new schedule and the new life
routine make the new life style a lot easier.

Not Enough Work: The first the department I were assigned was not giving enough work. At
that time, I felt underutilized and kind of inadequate for that position.

Measure Taken: I and the other interns took the measure of looking for a better department that
will give us work to develop our theoretical knowledge to a practical knowledge and also to
develop a better working skill. So as I found a better department and a better mentor the
problem of not having enough work to was completely solved.

CHAPTER THREE: INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE AND

BENEFITE
3.1. In terms of improving theoretical knowledge
The contribution of the internship program is not only for practical also it upgrades my
theoretical knowledge. It also increases the ability to apply systematic design procedure to open
ended problem. And how to analyses something technically and make it better in both
systematically and practically. By this means it upgrades my theoretical knowledge the same as
the practical one. Also Internship help me to know and memorizes the important conceptual
theoretical parts that have learned in the University. To mention some of my developed
theoretical knowledge:

 In developing my work, I have practiced a lot of theories that previously I had been
 learning in the class for three consecutive years.
 From my internship practice I have upgraded my web site design skills.
 A better knowledge on how to incorporate software and hardware part to make them
work as together.
 A better knowledge on how computerized hardware is installed.

3.2. In terms of Improving Practical Skill

Practical skill development is one of the bedrocks of any given profession and it is a sine over to
the continuous survival and growth of any given profession especially in computing. Practical
skills development in software engineering is related to the whole productivity of the student.
Practical knowledge involves developing skills through the use of different tools, different
software and systematic thinking and reasoning to perform tasks that related to the field of the
study.

3.3 In Terms of Improving Interpersonal Communication Skill

This skill is very important for every person to smooth the relation between the co-workers when
working together to create a suitable and productive work environment. Due to this reason I
develop such skills in a good manner like the ability to speak clearly and confident-tally, the
ability to listen and understand others (co-workers) and the ability giving a solution for a
problem. So as exact implementation of this skill it will provide the worker to have good
interpersonal skill and resulting good output in the experience of technical job

3.4. In Terms of Improving Team Playing Skill

Among the most important skills that we developed during the intern are our communication and
Working together /team sprit/ skill. In my company all of the workers‟ are sociable. Most of the
time we discuss about the works and other related issues wisely. During the internship there were
many job responsibilities that I have been done with the worker’s. So I have learned the
following points from them: -

 Sharing of information between team members.

 From our internship program we gained the way of sharing information, knowledge, and
experience to take the initiative to keep other team members informed. That means a
team player must share all relevant information to its members.
 I have learned that one team member must care about what the team members are doing
and their contribution to its success.
 I understood that the knowledge of team is stronger than the individual person’s
knowledge and it is more effective.
 I understood even in the future the knowledge of team is important if I share information
and work together.
 Listening the idea of others whatever it is.
 Be patient and wise and respect fullness of the voice of others.
 Open minded to others point of view.
 Able to celebrate the successes and learn the set backs
 Focus on the positive and take the negative in stride not let them down
 Understand others complain and make sure that the communication channel flow is free.

 Be flexible rather than rigid for new concepts and changes

3.5. In Terms of Leadership Skill

As I am being a trained the tasks assigned to me are not much leadership. I am at the bottom or
near the bottom of the organizational ladder being a trainer especially at the time when I enter to
the Cisco Networking Academy. But I have learnt that the way how the planers lead the
respective teams, for men leads its co-workers and the like at work place. Generally, I have
noticed the following important points from the leaders.

 Ability to encourage and motivate workers to do their best,

 The ability to communicate with all workers without any force,
 The ability to listen problems and focus on its solution,
 As leader to have clear and defined goals missions and vision.
 Be willing to admit and learn from failures and weaknesses,
 Also learns some solve any problems developed.

3.6. Work Ethics and Related Issues

When I first joined the Cisco Networking Academy center, our supervisor gave me orientation
on how I should act in Cisco Networking Academy center. And every day I took time to have
decent character in our team. Because, I understood the fact that the more I get close to others in
ethical way the more I get benefit from them. The benefit of the internship program was
interesting in improving ethical work habit.

Although it is difficult to memorize all benefits that are gained about work ethics, it is important
to mention the following:

 Learning and respecting of any work tasks that were important in order to do
those tasks effectively & efficiently
 Be on time at work and leave work by the right time (punctuality)
 Be responsible in analyzing and interpreting gathering of data
 Being loyal and honest when doing judgments on the issues of: -

 Cost vs. benefit analyzing Safety

CHAPTER FOUR: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1. Conclusion
Nowadays technology is a massive tool in developing a country and making the citizens
equipped with the skillset that is necessary to be competent in a world class level. Bing
competent among the different organization and professional’s calls for knowledge, experience
management skills and so much more. The various types of orientation programs, tasks and
trainings that we have been undertaking during this past one month on the site and the office
enhanced our knowledge in Software engineering. We are very glad to see how what we have
learnt in the university can be applied in the working. We were able to apply our theoretical
knowledge in the real life situation. Generally, the purpose of this Internship program was to
introduce us with working condition and mostly it helps us to grasp knowledge from practicing
the theory which we have been learning in the class. Also helps us gain different life skill set
like problem solving capacity, a skill to work together with people and etc. so these both skills
on both educational practice and life skill set like problem solving capacity help me this project
that I think is a problem solving tool for the company I interned at and also other companies in
the tech field.

5.2. Recommendation
 Recommendation for the Company

Even though I had a good and developing experience ant the company it’s an obvious thing that
the company does not have a program to create a good internship experience for us to develop
our skill most of our productivity and development comes from the staff’s personal help and

encouragement and our personal strength. So the company should work on developing a system
for intern students to have a good and productive internship experience.

 Recommendation for the School computing

Even though we had a good internship experience at the company I interned at we could’ve had a
better skill development if we had interned at a company that have a better internship program
that will help us gain what we supposed to get in an internship program. So the university should
have a better industry linkage to different companies that will help us develop a better internship
experience.
