Coming into this class I had a lot of expectations based on the course goals. It seemed
like we had everything planned out and a lot for us to learn and engage in. Through the first half
of the semester I feel that we are meeting these goals and I am growing as an academic writer.
Two class goals of ours are to realize academic writing is complicated, and
multidimensional, and another was to read and engage with academic text. Before I came into
this class I would read things and go straight into analyzing and reflecting on it. Now that we
have tougher material to read and engage in, I understand that academic writing is complicated
and it has steps. Now I take notes on the side and classmates gave me the idea to go look at
reader’s reviews. Going through these steps made the semester go much smoother. We are a very
active class and I feel like that was the intent. We move our desk in circles and when we are in
the circle we talk. We post things online after we read to prepare for class. We are doing all of
The writing to explore pieces also makes me think. They challenge me to make
thoughtful writing decisions. The Sponsors of Literacies essay did that as well. Overall I feel
comfortable with all the assignments that we have received thus far. The most challenging part
would be the comprehension writings that we read, but the more we read them the easier it gets
for me.

On top of the goals that we had as a class, I also had my own personal goals coming into
this class. One of the biggest problems I have as a writer is making my paper flow. I always have
good ideas to talk about, but it seems like it does not translate on the paper the way I think them.
I felt if I could transition better in my papers that they would be much better. My easy goal
would be to make my paper flow better. My medium goal would be to start doing things different
with my writing. It seems like I always write the same way and it would be interesting if I could
write in a different form rather than doing a standard essay all the time. It seems boring always
doing it that way. My hard goal would be to read more academic writings on my own time. I
think this would help my comprehension and also just help me understand a different type of
writing. I’m usually busy with my schedule but I want to find some time to read more readings
like the one’s in out book so that it becomes easier to grip the material.
I really like our peer review groups. I feel like being in the groups helps the class
environment that we are trying to promote. By putting us in groups helps meet people in class
and the reviewing makes us open up to each other. This is good so when we get in our circles we
will be ready and more comfortable to speak. It also helps the revision of our papers. It is good to
get multiple opinions on your paper including your professors. Everyone gave constructive
This was a very enjoyable first half of the semester. In such a short period of time we
accomplished a lot and I learned a lot. I feel like we met our goals and did everything we
expected to do. If the second half is anything like the first this class will be successful.
