LEARNING OBJECTIVES

lesson, pupils will

Complementary Reading
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to recognise with support typical features at word, sentence and text levels of a
thriller in a story (vocabulary, setting, atmosphere etc) including linking words/phrases
Pupils’ prior knowledge is activated for this lesson by giving examples of thriller stories they are familiar with and
brainstorming the typical features of the thriller genre.
PRE-LESSON Pupils discuss with a talk partner for one minute by writing words connected with the thriller genre (i.e. suspense,
thrill, excitement, scare, danger, action, anticipation, anxiety, surprise)
Pupils share answers
Pupils read the text as a class with the correct linking words / phrases
Nominated pupils explain the correct answer for statements 1-8.
Pupils read through the writing task in Activity B
Pupils look at the picture and guess what the story is about
Pupils read through the story and check their predictions
Pupils answers some comprehension questions posed by the teacher (Refer to Teacher’s Book, pg. 32)
Pupils list the elements of thriller in the story (vocabulary, setting, atmosphere etc).
LESSON Pupils read through the instruction and questions in Activity B
DEVELOPMENT Pupils complete the task by answering the question and underlining words and phrases to justify their answers
Pupils check answers as a class
Pupils red through the plan in Activity D and ask any questions about the structure of a story and the different
parts of it
Pupils write a plan of their story with a brief description of action / setting for each paragraph.
Pupils get help from teacher when necessary
Pupils write their stories after the teacher has checked their plans
Pupils complete their stories as homework if there is not enough time in class
Pupils read an example of an exciting opening which immediately catches the reader’s interest written on the
POST-LESSON board by the teacher
Pupils discuss with a talk partner to come up with an exciting opening line to a thriller story
