Tips for Successful Procedure Based Protocol Implementation.

1.    The radiologist(s) speak to the medical staff and explain that in order to reduce dose from CT
exams they are planning on using these procedure based/ “zoned” protocols.
2.    Every order coming to the radiology department for a pediatric or small patient exam should
include an actual or closely estimated weight. The order should also state if this is the first scan
of the patient (if known).
3.    The radiologist or designated person within the department responsible for putting the order
in front of the CT technologists would determine the indication type or “Zone” to be used.
4.    The technologists select the correct protocol for scanning.

Key Points for Procedure Based Protocols

1. Correct centering of the patient’s mass to iso-center is the key to correct mA modulation working properly.

2. Each order should be reviewed by appropriate personnel to insure the nature and need of the scan before the
scan is performed. This includes whether the patient is being scanned for the first time vs. a follow-up scan vs an
angiogram, as well as determining if CT is the appropriate modality for this patient’s needs.
3.Scan parameters such as kV, mA, and noise index should be compared against the numbers on the poster or
chart of the “Zones” before each scan

4. Confirm the weight of the patient before initiating the exposure.
