Solving Quadratic Equation By Completing the

Square and Using The Quadratic Formula

Most Essential Learning Competency:

The learner solves quadratic equations by:

c.) by completing the square.
d.) using the quadratic formula. ( M9AL - la –-b- 1)

What I Need to Know

In this lesson you will learn to:

1. derive the quadratic formula from the standard quadratic form using
completing the square method.
2. solve quadratic equation by completing the square and using the quadratic
formula.
3. appraise the value of learning quadratic equations to real-life situations.

Quadratic equations that cannot be solved by extracting the square roots and
factoring method can be solved using completing the square method and using the
quadratic formula.

The general form of the quadratic equation is ax²+ bx + c = 0 , where a, b,

and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0 . The quadratic formula can be derived from the
standard form using completing the square method. The roots of any quadratic
equation can be found using the formula:

What is It

Completing the Square is another method of solving quadratic equations.

This method involves transforming the quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 into the form
of (x-h)² = k , where k is greater than or equal to 0. Transforming the left side of the
equation into a perfect square trinomial is a preliminary skill that should be mastered
by the learners.

Perfect Square Trinomials are the product of the square of binomials. It is in

the form a² + 2ab + b² and a² - 2ab + b² .

Example 1: ( x + 5)² = x² + 10x + 25 is a perfect square trinomial because both x²

and 25 are perfect squares and 10x is twice the product of x and 5.

Example 2: ( x-10)² = x² - 20x + 100 is a perfect square trinomial because both x ²

and 100 are perfect squares and 20x is twice the product of x and -
10.

To solve the quadratic equations ax ²+ bx + c = 0 by completing the square

the following steps should be followed:
1. Divide both side of the equation by a then simplify.
2. Write the equations such that the terms with variables are on the left side
of the equation and the constant term in on the right side.

Grade 9 Mathematics 4
Module 3: Solving Quadratic Equation By Completing The Square
And Using the Quadratic Formula.

3. Add the square of one-half the coefficient of x on both sides of the

resulting equation. The left side of the equation becomes a perfect square
trinomial.
4. Express the perfect square trinomial on the left side as the square of
binomials.
5. Solve the resulting quadratic equations by extracting the square roots.
6. Solve the resulting linear equation.
7. Check the solutions obtained against the original equation.

Example 1. Solve the quadratic equation 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0 by completing the square.

Divide both side by 2 then simplify.

2x² + 8x – 10 = 0 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0
2 2
x² + 4x – 5 = 0

Add 5 to both sides of the equation then simplify.

x² + 4x – 5 = 0 x² + 4x – 5 + 5 = 0 + 5
x² + 4x = 5

Add to both sides of the equation the square of one-half of 4 .

½ ( 4) = 2 2² = 4
x² + 4x = 5 x² + 4x + 4 = 5 + 4
x² + 4x + 4 = 9

Express x² + 4x + 4 as the square of binomial

x² + 4x + 4 = 9 ( x + 2) ² = 9
Solve ( x + 2 )² = 9 x + 2 = ± √9
X+2=±3

Solve the resulting equations.

X+ 2 = 3 x+2=-3
X+2–2=3–2 x+2–2=-3-2
X=1 x =-5

Check the solutions obtained against the original equation 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0

For x = 1 For x = -5
2x² + 8x – 10 = 0 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0

2(1) ² + 8 ( 1) – 10 = 0 2( -5)² + 8 ( -5) – 10 = 0

2(1) + 8 - 10 ? 0 2(25) – 40 – 10 ? 0
2 + 8 – 10 ? 0 50 - 40 – 10 ? 0
0= 0 0 =0

Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So the equation 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0

is true when x = 1 or x = -5.

Answer: The equation 2x² + 8x – 10 = 0 has two solutions: x = 1 or x = -5

Grade 9 Mathematics 5
Module 3: Solving Quadratic Equation By Completing The Square
And Using the Quadratic Formula.

Example 2: Find the solution of the equation x² + 3x – 18 = 0 by completing the

square .

Add 18 both sides of the equation then simplify.

x² + 3x – 18 = 0 x² + 3x – 18 + 18 = 0 + 18
x² + 3x = 18

Add both sides of the equation the square of ½ of 3.

½ (3) – 3/2 ( 3/2)² = 9 /4
x² + 3x = 18 x² + 3x + 9/4 = 18 + 9/4
x² + 3x + 9/4 = 72/4 + 9/4 x²+3x + 9/4 = 81/4

Express x² + 3x + 9/4 as a square of binomial.

x² + 3x + 9/4 = 81/4 ( x + 3/2) ² = 81/4

Solve ( x+ 3/2)² = 81/4 by extracting the square root.

(x + 3/2)² = 81/4 x +3/2 = ± √81/√4
x + 3/2 = ± 9/2

Solve the resulting linear equations.

X + 3/2 = 9/2 x + 3/2 = - 9/2
X+ 3/2 – 3/2 = 9/2 – 3/2 x + 3/2 - 3/2 = - 9/2 – 3/2
x = 6/2 or 3 x = -12 / 2 or -6

Check the solutions obtained against the equation x² + 3x – 18 = 0.

For x = 3: For x = -6
x² + 3x – 18 = 0 x² +3x – 18 = 0
(3)² + 3( 3) – 18 ? 0 (-6)² + 3 ( -6) – 18 ? 0
9 + 9 – 18 ? 0 36 – 18- 18 ? 0
0=0 0 =0

Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So the equation x² + 3x – 18 = 0 is

true when x = 3 or when x = -6.

Answer: The equation has two solutions: x= 3 or x = -6.

And Using the Quadratic Formula.

Write the equation in the standard form.

2x² + 3x = 27 2x² + 3x – 27 = 0

Determine the values of a,b, & c.

2x² + 3x – 27 = 0 a = 2 , b = 3 , c = -27
Substitute the values of a, b, c in the quadratic formula.

x = -b ± √ b² - 4ac x = - (3) ± √ (3)²- 4(2)(-27)

X = -3 + 15 = 12 x = -3 – 15 = - 18
4 4 4 4
X= 3 x = - 9/2

Check the solutions obtained against the equation 2x² + 3x = 27 .

When x = 3 When x = - 9/2

2(3)² + 3 ( 3) = 27 2( -9/2) ² + 3(-9/2) = 27

2 ( 9) + 9 = 27 2 ( 81/4) – 27 /2 = 27
18 + 9 = 27 81/2 - 27/2 = 27
27 = 27 54/2 = 27
27 = 27

Both values of x satisfy the given equation. So the equation 2x² + 3x = 27 is

true when x = 3 or when x = -9/2.
