The Palawan State University History

The Palawan State University (PSU) has its humble beginnings as a teacher-
training institution known as Palawan Teacher’s College (PTC). The school was founded
on June 19, 1965 through Republic Act 4303 and has started operating since March 2,
1972. In 1984, PTC was recognized as Palawan State College by virtue of Batas
Pambansa 797 which authorized the school to offer other undergraduate degrees in the
Arts, Sciences and Technology. The conversion into a state university came a decade
later in November 12, 1994 through Republic Act 7818. After 48 years, the Palawan
State University emerged as the premier institute of higher learning in the province of
Palawan, with more than 26,000 students and almost 1000 faculty and staff members.

The Palawan State University Coron Campus History

It had been 27 years ago when the idea of extending classes in Coron came into
being which was realized after two years of hardwork and bringing the parties into the
table to provide educational opportunities not only to the people of Coron but the whole
Calamian Islands. The parties involved were the following: the Municipal Governments
of Coron, Culion, Linapacan and Busuanga who all pleaded to provide their municipal
aids to shoulder the operational expenses of the extramural studies center, (The
Municipality of Coron under the leadership of the late Hon. Mayor Alberto Enriquez, Jr.
separately promised to find a suitable school site as the host municipality, and fulfilled
that promise through a lot donation from the Fernandez Family), the Palawan State
University under the leadership of the late Dr. Crispiniano Acosta, Sr. which promised to
lend the university’s management expertise and curricular offerings, and the Parents-
Teachers Council under the leadership of Mrs. Rosa Palao Pinoon, a retired teacher
herself.
With the ever-present assistance of the parents and of the Local Government of
Coron, PSU remained steadfast in its commitment to deliver quality tertiary education
to the countryside. From 1994 to 1996, classes are held at Coron School of Fisheries
with 111 students, by 1996 to 2003, classes were held at PNP Barracks and by 2003 to
present, the campus resides in a 1.5 hectares donated lot by the Fernandez family.
From the initial three courses namely AB Political Science, Bachelor of
Elementary Education and Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, PSU Coron now
boasts of seven programs/majors to wit, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of
Secondary Education major in English, Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Bachelor of
Science in Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Science in Criminology, Bachelor of

Management. These are the programs which are subject to the current evaluation for
accreditation, of which 5 programs are for Level One Accreditation after having
undergone PSV last 2016, and 2 programs are for the Preliminary Survey Visits. among
the programs offered, the Bachelor of Science in Criminology was as of the moment has
the program compliance (COPC) from the Commission on Higher Education while the
remaining programs are subject for compliance.
With the expansion of its curricular offering, the population of PSU Coron grew
dramatically and it is now considered as one of the biggest external campuses in North
Palawan though at present, the drop-in enrollment is attributable to the introduction of
the K-12 program of the Department of Education. At present, the PSU Coron provides
1,849 professional graduates with a satisfactory employment rate.

PSU – Coron Campus Goals and Objectives

“The Palawan State University – Coron is committed to democratize education in the
locality by bringing quality tertiary education at the doorsteps of every Calamianon
through the offering of courses relevant to the socio-economic progress of the
Calamianes group of island Municipalities. It aims to produce a workforce that is
composed of holistically molded and trained individuals who possess global skills in the
fields of education, criminal justice, business, and hospitality service and tourism
industry.”

PSU Beloved, on this day we greet you,
Loyal sons and daughters, ever shall we strive to be
Let they name be echoed, here and everywhere
Honor and fame may forever, crown the glory of your name
Come my fellow schoolmates, let’s join hands together
Let us all be happy, sing of our dear PSU
With our voices loud and clear, singing songs of cheers
Praise our Alma matter, now and forevermore
