Bearings - A Machine Member That Acts As Support/guide/control For Other Machine Part Such As Shaft

The document discusses bearings, which are machine components that support or guide other moving parts like shafts. There are two main types of bearing elements: sliding element bearings and rolling element bearings, the latter including ball bearings and roller bearings. Bearings can be classified based on the load application as either radial bearings, which support radial loads, or thrust bearings, which carry axial loads. The document provides examples of calculations for bearing stress, frictional torque, power loss, load capacity, and life of ball and roller bearings. It includes 5 examples applying these calculations.

Bearings - a machine member that acts as support/guide/control for other

machine part such as shaft.

Why do we need to use bearings?

Two Types of Bearing Elements
Thursday, 2 December 2021 1:04 pm

1. Sliding Element Bearing - type of bearing where essentially sliding friction exists
2. Rolling Element Bearings
 Ball Bearing - uses spherical balls as rolling elements
 Rolling Bearing - uses cylindrical rollers as rolling elements

 Ball bearings are used for higher speeds and lighter loads than are roller
bearings.
 Roller bearings perform better under shock and impact loading.

1. Radial Bearing - aka Journal Bearing, supports radial load

2. Thrust Bearing - carries a load collinear to the axis

Design how many spherical balls must be used for a ball bearing that will satisfy
the given condition: the total radial load acting on the bearing is 10kips, the
maximum bearing pressure is 1.3ksi, and the contact area is 2 sq.in.

The two main bearings of a one cylinder steam engine are 152mm diameter and
280mm long and support a load of 4400kg. The bearings are well-ventilated and
are heavy in construction. The coefficient of friction in bearings is 0.017 and
crankshaft rotates at 450rpm. Bearing diametral clearance is 0.152mm.
Determine the unit loading per bearing (psi)

heavy in construction. The coefficient of friction in bearings is 0.017 and crankshaft
rotates at 450rpm. Bearing diametral clearance is 0.152mm.

From the previous problem, determine the friction loss per bearing.

A shaft revolving at 1740rpm is supported by a bearing with a length of 105mm

and a diameter of 64mm. If the load is light and SAE Oil No. 20 is used with an
average temp of 65degC and diametral clearance is 0.136mm, what would be
the power loss (in kW) due to friction?

Which bearing would last longer?

Bearing A: Use spherical bearings, maximum rotational speed is 1450rpm,
the ratio of the applied to the dynamic load is 1/7.
Bearing B: Use cylindrical bearings, maximum rotational speed is 1300rpm,
the dynamic load is 8000lb, while the applied load is 1200lb.
