DSP Expt 1 - 2021

This document provides instructions for a MATLAB assignment to analyze the magnitude and phase responses of different linear time-invariant discrete time systems by plotting their pole-zero locations. Students are asked to write a MATLAB program to obtain pole-zero plots and magnitude/phase responses for various transfer functions, and observe relationships between pole-zero locations and filter type/stability/magnitude and phase responses. The aim is to help students understand how pole-zero placement affects discrete system characteristics.

TITLE: Transfer function magnitude response and phase response of LTI discrete time
systems.

AIM: To plot pole zero locations and magnitude response of different types of LTI
discrete time systems.
OUTCOME: Students will be able to:
1. Analyze discrete time systems in time and Z-domain
2. Realize discrete using different structures
3. Analyze discrete time systems using discrete Fourier transform

Theoretical Background:

The location of the poles and zeros of the system function affects the magnitude
response characteristics of discrete time system. So it is essential to know the
relationship between the locations of the poles and zeros of the system function and
their effects on system’s magnitude response specifically input signal attenuation,
system bandwidth and emphasis on particular frequencies. This task will help in the
design of the digital filter.

Method:

Write a MATLAB program for the following cases:

Case 1: Given a transfer function

where

i) Plot pole zero locations of for

ii) Plot magnitude and phase response of for
iii) Plot Impulse response
iv) Plot pole zero locations of for
v) Plot magnitude and phase response of for

vi) Plot impulse response

vii) Repeat for ά = 0.9
