Summary:

With this modification, the current magnetic plug is replaced with a longer plug with better performance.
The assembly containing the new plug and its mounting flange is installed in the position of the former assembly.

Reason for last Revision:

The objective of revision 2 of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN is to transform Service Bulletin revision 1 into an
industry ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN and to include the new presentation and new writing standards.

Compliance:

1. PLANNING INFORMATION

CAUTION

MAKE SURE THAT THE MODIFICATIONS


RELATED TO THIS ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN
AGREE WITH THE HELICOPTER CONFIGURATION
AT THIS TIME. IF THE MODIFICATIONS DO NOT
AGREE WITH THE HELICOPTER CONFIGURATION:
- PREPARE THE NECESSARY ADAPTATION
WORK.
- GET THE APPROVAL BY THE APPLICABLE
LOCAL AIR TRANSPORT AUTHORITIES.
- COMPLY WITH THE AIRWORTHINESS
REQUIREMENTS.
THIS ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN IS WRITTEN FOR
THE INITIAL HELICOPTER CONFIGURATION
SPECIFIED IN THE INDIVIDUAL INSPECTION
LOGBOOK (RIC). IT INCLUDES ONLY THE POST-
DELIVERY CONFIGURATION CHANGES WHICH
ARE KNOWN AND APPROVED BY AIRBUS
HELICOPTERS.

1.A. EFFECTIVITY

1.A.1. Helicopters/installed equipment or parts

Main Gear Boxes (MGBs) that have a magnetic plug Part Number (P/N) 704A34543000 or an
electromagnetic plug (P/N) 704A34543007 and have not embodied modification 077175.

NOTE 1

The aim of modification 077175 is to replace the magnetic


plug or the electromagnetic plug with an extended
electromagnetic plug.

NOTE 2

Refer to the Individual Inspection Logbook (RIC AMS) and/or


Aircraft Logbook to identify the modification status of the
helicopter.

NOTE 3

Refer to the Log Cards (FM) to identify the modification


status of the helicopter/equipment.

SERVICE BULLETIN APPROVAL AND ALERT
SERVICE BULLETIN ENBODIMENT DATES.

1.C. REASON

The objective of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN is to improve the detection of metal particles in the MGB
lubricating oil.

Revision 1 of this Service Bulletin:


- Recommended the embodiment of MOD 077175 by December 31, 2005
- Added the operational procedure for reworking the lower casing to paragraph 2.B.3. (for the installation of
the magnetic plug if there is interference with the inner surfaces of the casing)
- Updated the layout of this Service Bulletin.

Revision 2:

The objective of revision 2 of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN is to transform Service Bulletin revision 1 into
an industry ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN and to include the new presentation and new writing standards.

The safety level of the helicopter complies with the airworthiness regulations but the issue of this ALERT
SERVICE BULLETIN makes the safety standards of Airbus Helicopters higher.

1.D. DESCRIPTION

This ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN includes the work steps that follow:
- Replacement of the magnetic plug or electromagnetic plug
- Boring of the lower casing, if necessary.

1.E. COMPLIANCE

1.E.1. Compliance at H/C manufacturer level

For Airbus Helicopters, it is necessary to comply with the instructions of paragraph 3. of this ALERT
SERVICE BULLETIN before the delivery of the helicopter or the equipment.

Helicopters/installed equipment or parts:

The modification has been integrated in the new design of


the installation since January 1, 2000.

NOTE 5

This date is only given for information. Refer to the


helicopter's Certificate of Conformity (included in the
Individual Inspection Logbook), the Log Cards (FM) or the
Aircraft Logbook to identify the modification status of the
helicopter.

Non-installed equipment or parts:

NOTE 6

The modification has been integrated in the new design of


the installation since January 1, 2000.

1.E.2. Compliance in service

The operator must do the work on the helicopter and on non-installed equipment.

Comply with paragraph 2.B. of the Service Bulletin revision 1 by December 31, 2005.

- For helicopters which complied with the Service Bulletin revision 0 or revision 1:
. No other action is necessary.

- For helicopters which did not comply with revision 0 or revision 1 of the Service Bulletin:
. Comply with paragraph 3. of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN not more than 1 year after you received
revision 2 of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN (refer to the issue date on the page footer).

Non-installed equipment or parts:

On PRE MOD 077175 MGBs (refer to the Equipment Log Card (FM)), comply with paragraph 3.B.2. before
installation of the MGB on an aircraft and not more than 1 year after you received revision 2 of this ALERT
SERVICE BULLETIN (refer to the issue date on the page footer).

The information or instructions relate to MOD 077175, which was approved on September 14, 1999 under
the authority of DGAC Design Organization Approval No. F.JA01.

Approval of this document:

Approval is limited to civil version helicopters subject to an Airworthiness Certificate.

The technical information contained in Revision 0 of this Service Bulletin was approved
on May 17, 2000 under the authority of DGAC Design Organization Approval No. F.JA01.

The technical information contained in Revision 1 of this Service Bulletin was approved
on May 24, 2005 under the authority of EASA Design Organization Approval No. 21J.056.

The technical information contained in this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN Revision 2 was approved
on June 02, 2021 under the authority of EASA Design Organization Approval No. 21J.700 for civil version
helicopters subject to an Airworthiness Certificate.

The technical information contained in this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN Revision 2 was approved
on June 02, 2021 by the Airbus Helicopters Airworthiness Department for export military versions.

The technical information contained in this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN Revision 2 was approved
on June 02, 2021 under the prerogatives of the recognition of design capability FRA21J-002-DGA for French
Government helicopters.

1.G. MANPOWER

Airbus Helicopters recommends that the personnel who will do this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN have this
qualification:

Qualification: 1 Mechanical Technician.

The man-hours are an estimate given for information only and for a standard helicopter configuration.

Estimated Man-hours: - 2 hours to comply with paragraph 3.B.2.a.


- 8 hours to comply with paragraph 3.B.2.b.

The helicopter downtime is an estimate given for information only and for a standard helicopter configuration.

The estimate of the helicopter downtime is 1 day and a half.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

3.A. GENERAL

- Comply with the instructions on the use of greases, refer to Work Card 20-01-01-301 (MTC).
- Comply with the instructions on the use of cleaning products on individual parts and on aircraft, refer to
Work Card 20-04-01-102 (MTC).
- Comply with the handling instructions for the handling of helicopters in a hangar and in a prepared area.
Refer to Work Card 20-07-01-201 (MTC).

3.B. WORK STEPS

3.B.1. Preliminary steps

- Park the helicopter in a hangar (Work Card 20-07-02-201 (MTC)).


- Disconnect all the electrical power supplies (Work Card 20-07-03-406 (MTC)).
- Install access equipment.
- Remove and/or open all applicable cowlings, panels, doors and other items of equipment to get access to
the different work areas.

3.B.2. Procedure

3.B.2.a. Embodiment of MOD 077175 (Figure 1)

- Drain the Main Gear Box (MGB) (Task 12-10-00, 3-1 (AMM) or Work Card 12-00-00-301 (MET)).
- Remove the magnetic plug (b) or the electromagnetic plug (c) (Detail A, Figure 1) from the lower casing (a)
(principles of Task 63-21-00, 4-3 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-410 (MET)).
- Remove and discard the gasket (d).
- Apply grease (4) to the gasket (1) (Detail B, Figure 1).
- Install the gasket (1) on the electromagnetic plug (3).
- Apply grease (4) to the threads of the electromagnetic plug (3).

CAUTION

INSTALL THE ELECTROMAGNETIC PLUG (3)


WITHOUT USING TOO MUCH FORCE, UNTIL THE
GASKET (1) IS COMPRESSED.

CAUTION

DURING INSTALLATION, MAKE SURE THAT THE


ELECTROMAGNETIC PLUG (3) DOES NOT TOUCH
THE CAST IN THE LOWER CASING (a).

- Install the electromagnetic plug (3) together with its O-ring (2) on the lower casing (a).

Interpretation of the results:

- If the electromagnetic plug (3) does not touch the cast in the lower casing (a):
. Install the electromagnetic plug (3) (principles of Task 63-21-00, 4-3 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-410
(MET)).
. If connected, do a check of the MGB magnetic chip detector (Task 60-00-00, 6-2 (AMM) or
Work Card 60-00-00-602 (MET)).
. Fill the MGB (Task 12-10-00, 3-1 (AMM) or Work Card 12-00-00-301 (MET)).

- If the electromagnetic plug (3) touches the cast in the lower casing (a):
. Do the boring of the lower casing (a) (paragraph 3.B.2.b.).

or
. Remove the electromagnetic plug (3).
. Install the magnetic plug (b) or the electromagnetic plug (c) (Detail A, Figure 1) (principles of
Task 63-21-00, 4-3 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-410 (MET)).
. Fill the MGB (Task 12-10-00, 3-1 (AMM) or Work Card 12-00-00-301 (MET)).
. Do the boring of the lower casing (a) at the latest at the next 600 FH inspection (paragraph 3.B.2.b.).

or,
. Send the MGB (not shown) back to Airbus Helicopters refer to paragraph 2.D. or to an approved repair
station for the boring of the lower casing (a).

3.B.2.b. Boring of the MGB lower casing (Figures 1 and 2)

- Remove the MGB (Task 63-00-00, 4-1 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-402 (MET)).
- Remove the oil pump (not shown) (Task 63-21-00, 4-4 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-403 or
63-10-16-403 (MET)).
- Remove the lower casing (a) (Figure 1) (Task 63-21-00, 4-5 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-409 (MET)).
- Clean the inner surfaces of the lower casing (a) with cleaning agent (5).
- Identify the area in which the electromagnetic plug (3) touches the lower casing (a).
- Remove the electromagnetic plug (3).

CAUTION

IN THE LOWER CASING (a), THE MAXIMUM DEPTH


OF THE BORE (P) MUST NOT BE MORE THAN
56 MM (2.204 IN.).

- Bore the area of interference with an 18 mm (.708 in) diameter milling cutter (zz) until the electromagnetic
plug (3) is correctly installed (Figure 2).
- Use suction to collect the magnesium particles in the lower casing (a).
- Clean the lower casing internally with cleaning agent (5).
- Apply protective coating (6) to the bored area (Work Card 20-04-04-408 (MTC)).
- Apply primer P05 (7) (Work Card 20-04-05-402 (MTC)).
- Install the lower casing (a) (Task 63-21-00, 4-5 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-409 (MET)).
- Install the oil pump (not shown) (Task 63-21-00, 4-4 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-403 or
63-10-16-403 (MET)).
- Install the MGB (Task 63-00-00, 4-1 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-402 (MET)).
- Apply grease (4) to the gasket (1) (Detail B, Figure 1).
- Install the gasket (1) on the electromagnetic plug (3).
- Apply grease (4) to the threads of the electromagnetic plug (3).
- Install the electromagnetic plug (3) (principles of Task 63-21-00, 4-3 (AMM) or Work Card 63-00-00-410
(MET)).

- If connected, do a check of the MGB magnetic chip detector (Task 60-00-00, 6-2 (AMM) or
Work Card 60-00-00-602 (MET)).
- Fill the MGB (Task 12-10-00, 3-1 (AMM) or Work Card 12-00-00-301 (MET)).

3.B.3. Final steps

- Install or close all cowlings, panels, doors and items of equipment that you removed and/or opened during
the preliminary steps (paragraph 3.B.1. of this ALERT SERVICE BULLETIN).
- Do a check of the appearance of the helicopter (Work Card 20-07-03-408 (MTC)).
- If necessary, connect all the electrical power supply.
- Remove the access equipment.
- Set the helicopter to flight condition.
