This document describes a practical training report on testing a DC machine from a group of 5 electrical engineering students. It includes an introduction to DC machines and describes tests performed on a DC generator and DC motor without a load. For the DC generator test, the open circuit characteristics were determined by varying the excitation current from 0.03 to 0.11 amps and recording the corresponding induced voltages ranging from 91 to 214 volts. A graph of the results is provided. The no-load test measures the magneto-motive force and field current required to generate a given voltage at a constant speed without any load.

DC MACHINE TEST

INTRODUCTION
A DC Machine is an electro-mechanical energy conversion device. There are two types of
DC machines which are DC generator and DC motor. A DC Generator converts mechanical
Power into DC electrical power, whereas, a DC motor convert’s d.c electrical power into
mechanical powered rotating electrical. DC machine has mainly two parts which are Stator
and Rotor. In the dc machine, the field winding is placed on the stator and the armature
winding on the rotor. A dc current is passed through the field winding to produce flux in the
machine. Voltage induced in the armature winding is alternating. A mechanical commutator
and a brush assembly function as a rectifier or inverter, making the armature terminal voltage
unidirectional. The stator and rotor are separated from each other by an air gap. The rotor is
free to move and is the inner part of the machine.

The tests performed under DC Machine test are DC Generator on no load and DC Motor on
no load.

PROCEDURES
i. All the equipment’s and components required for the experiment were prepared.
ii. The dc generator and ac motor were coupled together.
iii. The connection of the circuit was done according to the circuit diagram in which the
field windings was connected to the variable dc power supply.

iv. The induction motor was powered from a fixed ac power supply.
v. Observation of the circuit parameter was done.
vi. Recording of all the observed parameter was done as indicated below in the table of
results

THEORY OF NO-LOAD TEST

The Open circuit value shows the magneto-motive force and hence the field current required
to generate a given voltage at any speed, on no load. It is a graph showing the variation of the
induced electromotive force as a function of excitation current, when the speed is held
constant, and with no load current.
