Endangered Species must be protected

‘’One does not know how important something is, until it is gone and cannot return’’
– an all-time famous saying. Every single day animals are dying and if we don’t do anything
we could lose them forever. When we talk about endangered animals, we refer to animals that
are close to becoming extinct, meaning they could cease to exist. The main cause of
extinction in its majority comes from human activity, making us the first reason why every
single day more and more species are disappearing. Endangered species must be protected
because their extinction causes a domino effect that causes an overwhelming number of
species dying that will affect human beings in a way that is beyond repair.

Humans, animals, plants and organisms have evolved side by side together on this
planet over millions of years and every organism has its own place in an ecosystem. Different
species depend on each other within an ecosystem, balance is needed and the loss of one
species often triggers the loss of others, like for example grey wolf’s were once hunted to
near-extinction in Yellowstone National Park and are the predators of deers, so less grey
wolf’s meant more deer and this means less plants, but this affects the beavers in Yellowstone
that needs this plants for winter survival, so this would also cause a reduction on beavers
population. Change to the population of one species can significantly affect other species
even if they don’t have a direct interaction. All species rely on each other for the maintenance
of healthy populations and that includes us human beings.

There are many organizations that are working to protect endangered species, but
unfortunately this attempt is not enough to repair the damage. At this moment there are
around 41,415 species that are endangered in the world and the most alarming fact about this
is that 16,118 of that increased in one year alone (National Geographic Society). What causes
the most threat to this species are the destruction and pollution of this animal’s habitats and
this is commonly done by human’s actions. Two of this endangered species that are affected
by loss of habitat are polar bears that are essential in the Artic circle because they ensure that
walruses, seals and other pray do not overpopulate the Artic with this causing a problem to
the remaining wild life in the Arctic Circle, and on the other hand the bees that are the
primary and most effective species that fertilize most edible plants and without them there
would not be enough plants on the planet for animals or humans to survive.

With so much attention and worry to the raise in numbers of endangered species,
many are doing what they can to slow down this numbers while adapting new ways of living
that can help on the long run. With this being said there are many people who believe that we
do not need to save endangered species since extinction is part of evolution and we only need
to focus on a stable future for human beings. With the thought that extinction is the engine of
evolution, the mechanism by which natural selection wipes out the poorly adapted and allows
the strongest to flourish. But extinction is not what drives evolution, it is survival that does.
New species are not actually new, they come from those who did not die out but that adapted
and survived, like polar bears that evolved from brown bears of the tundra, adapting to new
conditions.
The reason why endangered animals should be protected is because if we don’t pay
attention to the importance of it, soon we will lose more and more species that are vital for
the balance of the ecosystems. I believe we all need to try to avoid the destruction of their
habitats, like stop consuming products that affect them directly because of the mass
production of it. We need to slow down the endangerment of this animals, although is not
something that can be done in a day, it could be done if we give it the importance to this
cause and all the money that has been invested in the destruction of their habitats. Other thing
that we need to focus on is climate change, that is getting worse by the hour affecting even
more this species, shortening their life expectation. We are to blame for this, and we need to
act on this because if we don’t soon we would exterminate our own race.
