Assessment of Grammar

The document discusses the differences between explicit and implicit grammar knowledge. It states that explicit grammar refers to knowledge that is fully developed and communicated without ambiguity, while implicit grammar refers to knowledge that is implied rather than directly stated. It then provides definitions of explicit and implicit, noting that implicit means a hidden meaning, while explicit directly expresses the real meaning of a sentence clearly without ambiguity. The document goes on to differentiate several grammar-related terms: grammar vs grammaring (the latter emphasizes grammar as a dynamic process rather than fixed rules), error correction vs feedback (the former should be avoided to allow reflection while maintaining communication flow), and spoken vs written grammar (the former is more flexible with looser rules and different high-

Thinking about your own understanding of English grammar, would you characterize your
grammar knowledge as mostly explicit and mostly implicit or a combination of both explicit and
implicit?

Explicit and implicit are two words with similar meaning which leads to considerable confusion
among native and English second language speakers. So the deference between the explicit and
implicit is the term explicit is used to describe a scenario that has been fully developed and
communicated, with nothing left unsaid. When executing a certain task, something is said to be
explicit when there is no opportunity for confusion. And the term implicit is the phrase implicit
refers to something that is expressed in an indirect or implied manner. This indicates that the
circumstance in question hasn't been stated. When individuals are unable to grasp something
because it is not directly stated but rather implied in the phrase, it is said to be explicit.

The contrast in the descriptions of the two concepts can be seen in the definitions of explicit and
implicit. Implicit is a word that is used to express a hidden meaning. An implicit sentence's
meaning is implied and does not exist. On the other hand, explicitly expresses the sentence's real
meaning. This indicates that whatever conveyed by an explicit phrase is the direct meaning, which
is stated clearly and without ambiguity.

Differentiate the following terms and concepts.

1. Grammar and Grammaring

Grammaring emphasizes grammar as a dynamic process rather than a system of rules. According
to the definition stated above, grammar is no longer conceived as a description of language or
native speaker's competence.

2. Error correction and feedback

Learners' knowledge of their faults and performance is greatly aided by feedback. Immediate
feedback or correction, on the other hand, should be avoided so that the learner has time to reflect
on his or her error while maintaining the flow of communication. As a result, after the learner's
performance, feedback should be supplied.

3. Spoken vs. written grammar.

The word order in spoken grammar is flexible. The rules of spoken language are substantially
looser than those of written grammar. Prepositions, pronouns, and articles - the little words that
give sentences proper grammatical structure - are among the top 100 words in written grammar.
Many of the top 100 words in spoken English are verbs.
