Composition and Research Skills
Course Description ENGL 201 Composition and Research Skills builds upon the skills
acquired in pre-requisite courses mainly ENGL 151 to further develop
students’ critical thinking and academic writing competencies. Students
will read and respond to a variety of texts from different disciplines and
produce a researched essay using analytical and critical thinking skills in
response to texts.
Course Objectives Students will identify basic elements that guide them to develop an
essay
Students will reflect on and analyze selected readings
Students will write a range of rhetorical modes, focusing on a
particular mode and developing the essay accordingly
Students will summarize and paraphrase sources to avoid
plagiarism
Students will use research skills to write researched –based essays
on any topic of interest
Course Outcomes A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements will have
demonstrated an ability to:
CO1: Write an essay with main idea and supporting details that are
relevant, coherent and adequate
CO2: Write with varied and effective academic vocabulary and mastery
of correct word forms
CO3: Demonstrate clear knowledge of different patterns of organization
CO4: Support arguments with appropriate facts, evidence, numbers,
statistics, etc…
CO5: Proofread and edit sentences
CO6: Use research skills to write researched –based essays on any topic
of interest
