3 Safety Precautions
All safety directions must be respected in order to avoid damage to personnel,
environment and equipment. In this document, the following annotations are used
with belonging signification:
Warning
Indicates possibilities for hazards or unsafe practices, which COULD result
in fatal or severe personnel injuries or substantial product or property
damage, if the required precautions are not taken.
CAUTION!
Indicates possibilities for hazards or unsafe practices, which COULD result in minor
personnel injuries and/or property damage, if the required precautions are not taken.
Note
Draws attention to specific information of technical significance which might not be
obvious to specialist personnel, or points at important remarks in the procedures to
follow.

5 Installation
Dimension, design and connect fuel system and its lines/components according to
PON_INST_GUIDE and Systems Data. Systems Data parameters overrules
PON_INST_GUIDE if discrepancies.
Refer to FFS project Item 08 for connection details
Prescribed counterpressure/fuel system back pressure must not be allowed exceeded.
Highest fuel level in the relevant tank is generally not to exceed the vertical height of
the engine’s injectors, due to risk of oil dilution by internal fuel leakage.

FFS normally delivers the engine drained of coolant (to lowest practical level/drain
point) due to transport regulations.
Refer to PON_INST_GUIDE and Systems Data. Systems Data parameters overrules
PON_INST_GUIDE if discrepancies.
Refer to C32 Manual or C18 Manual
If expansion tank is present on the engine, connect the supplied additional expansion
tank to engine by the supplied rubber hose to the filler neck, with its bottom 100-
300mm higher than the highest point of the engine.
Note that the raw(/sea) water side cooling system on FFS pump/bell housing/engine
assembly generally is a closed system mounted on the complete unit from FFS works.
Note This neither requires nor allows any customer adaptations or modifications. If the
purchased unit is supplied with raw water pump and no FFS integrated seawater
cooling system, refer to PON_INST_GUIDE
Dimension, design and connect the exhaust system and engine room air supply
according to PON_INST_GUIDE and Systems Data. Systems Data parameters
overrules PON_INST_GUIDE if discrepancies.
Use values in Performance Data for guidance.
Prescribed counterpressure/exhaust back pressure must not be allowed exceeded.
Proper countermeasures preventing water ingress into the exhaust system and
subsequently the engine must be designed and executed.
All FFS supplied protective covers must be left fully attached and sealed on the exhaust
outlets and air filters until exhaust system final assembly and before first start (air
filters). No foreign objects, dust or debris of any kind is allowed to enter the engine
exhaust outlets or air inlets, during storage, installation or commissioning.

Alignment of
Pump / Gearbox / Clutch
Proper alignment for pump and gearbox is important. This will reduce vibrations, excessive wear
and load on all the components connected to the couplings. This document shows the procedure
for coupling alignment for a Fi-Fi system.
Angular Alignment
Attach a clock gauge to one of the coupling halves,
letting the point of the gauge rest on the other half
surface side (Fig. 1). Turning the shaft and gauge
together and reading the gauge will detect necessary
adjustments to obtain the alignment tolerance
requirement.
Radial Alignment
Attach a clock gauge to one of the coupling halves,
letting the point of the gauge rest on the other
coupling half radially (Fig. 2). Turning the shaft and Fig. 1 Angular alignment with clock gauge
gauge together and reading the gauge will detect
necessary adjustments to obtain the alignment
tolerance requirement.
Axial Alignment
For couplings on resiliently mounted engines in
particular, this will apply. Here, the coupling
documentation must be adhered to in each particular
case. The coupling must be measured and axially
located in accordance to relevant specifications.
Alignment tolerances
In most cases the required alignment tolerances are
given in the documentation from the coupling Fig. 2 Radial alignment with clock gauge
manufacturer. If these tolerances are not known, the
following values can be used as guidelines:
Flexible couplings
Angular (Fig. 1) is maximum: 0,1° (0,1° =
0,17mm at a distance of 100mm from shaft
centre line).
Radial (Fig. 2) is maximum 0,2mm.
Tooth couplings
Angular (Fig. 1) is maximum: 0,1mm at
surface on the hub end.
Radial (Fig. 2) is maximum: 0,1mm.
General
If the pump has been supplied mounted together with the driver on a common base frame,
preliminary alignment has been done prior to dispatch from our works. Ensure that the base frame
is evenly supported on the foundation bed. In this way alignment is not affected when tightening
the base frame bolts to the foundation.
ATTENTION!
Final alignment must be carried out after the following activities are completed:
• Fixing bolts have been correctly tightened with torque according to bolt size and type.
• Piping has been connected and pressure tested. Pipe supports are carrying the loads.
• Pump has been operating until a stable bearing temperature has been reached.
• The pump support does not carry any load.
Alignment result
Please fill in the measured alignment results in the table below and return to Fire Fighting Systems
AS. Please also report axial alignment result if applicable.
