Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on

Linear Inequalities and Application of Linear Function!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
self-learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self –
learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Self-Learning Module on Linear

RECAP

How to solve the equation of linear function? What are the forms of linear
function and linear equation? How to graph linear function?

LESSON

Solving Problems Involving Linear Functions

Many solutions to real life problems require the use of linear functions. In
this lesson, your skills in interpreting a problem and how to solve it are essential.

Example 1: A TV repairman charges a minimum service fee of P350 and P50 per
hour, thereafter. What is the linear function of service fee by the number of
hours? Find the repair charge for 5 hours.

Solution:

Let s be the service fee and h be the number of hours.

Equation: s=50 h+ 350
s=P 50 ( 5 ) + P 350=P 250+ P 350=P 600

Example 2: Jamie plans to spend P1000 for T-shirts and shorts. If a short costs
P200 and a T-shirt costs P100, find all possible number combinations of T=shirts
and shorts which she can spend her money. Find the equation of the relation.

Solution:

Let t be the number of t-shirts and s be the number of shorts.

Illustrate the possibilities using a table.

t 2 4 6 8
s 4 3 2 1
The equation is 100 t+200 s=1000

Graphs of Linear Inequalities

Let us consider the linear equation y=−2 x +3. The line divides the
coordinate plane into 3 sets of points, the points on the two half-planes and the
points on the line.
Thus, the set of points can either be in the line y=−2 x +3 or the half-plane
y >−2 x+ 3 (above or right-side the line) or the half-plane y <−2 x+ 3 (below or left-
side of the line).

To illustrate the points not on the line, a dashed line takes the place of the bold line
representing the equation.

Examples:

2
1. Graph y > x−1
3

Procedure:

2
a. Graph the equation y= x −1 with a
3
dashed line.
b. Get one point above the line and
check if it will satisfy the inequality. If the result is a true statement, then
shade the upper plane. If not, shade the lower plane. Let say (0,0),

2
0> ( 0 )−1=−1, a true statement.
3
2
c. Shade the plane above y= x −1
3

2. Graph y ≤ x +2

Procedure:

a. Graph the equation y=x +2.

b. Get one point above the line and

check if it will satisfy the inequality.
If the result is a correct statement, then shade the upper plane. If not,
shade the lower plane. Let say (2, 2),2 ≤2+2=4 , a false statement.

c. Shade the plane below y=x +2
