Self – Learning Module 8
Determining the Equation of
Linear Function
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on

Determining the Equation of Linear Function!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
self-learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Self-Learning Module on Determining

the Equation of Linear Function!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace
and time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while
being an active learner.

RECAP

What is a linear function? How to graph linear function? What are the four
ways to draw the graph of linear function?

LESSON

The graph of a linear function was drawn using points, slopes and
intercepts. You can use these properties to solve linear functions.

The Slope-Intercept Form

If the slope and the y-intercept of a line are given, the slope-intercept form
can be used to determine the equation of a line.

Example: The slope m=−5 and the y-intercept b=3, the equation of a line can be
solved by substituting the value of the slope (m) and the y-intercept (b) in

y=mx+b , then, y=−5 x +3.

The Point - Slope Form

You can determine the equation of a line if the slope and a point are given. The
y− y 1
slope formula m= can be transformed into point-slope form. The point-slope
x−x 1
form is y− y1 =m ( x−x 1 )

3
Example. Find the equation of a line whose slope is and passing through point
2
(4, -5).

3
In the given, m= and the point ( x , y ) =( 4 ,−5 ).
2
Using the point-slope form:

y− y1 =m ( x−x 1 )

3
y−(−5)= ( x−4 ) Substitute the given
2
2 ( y+ 5 )=3 ( x−4 ) Multiply both sides by 2

2 y+ 10=3 x−12 Distributive property

3 x−2 y=22 Adding -2y and 12 both sides.

3
Or y= x -11 Slope-intercept form
2

The Two-Point Form

Similarly, you can solve the equation of a line by using any two points on the
y− y 1
line. Using the formula m= and assigning an arbitrary point ( x 2 , y 2 )will give us
x−x 1
y− y 1 y 2− y 1
the two-point form. The two-point form is = .
x−x 1 x 2−x1

Example: Find the equation of a line passing through points (-2, 4) and (3, -5).
In the given, ( x 1 , y 1 ) =(−2 , 4 ) ∧, ( x2 , y 2 )=( 3 ,−5 ).

Using the two-point form:

y− y 1 y 2− y 1
=
x−x 1 x 2−x1
y−(4) (−5)−(4 )
= Substitute the given
x−(−2) 3−(−2)
y−4 −9
= Simplify
x+ 2 5
5 y−20=−9 x−18 Multiply the equation by (x-4) and -9
9 x +5 y=2 Add both sides by 9y and 20
−9 2
y= x+ Slope-intercept form
5 5

The Intercept form

Recall the x and y-intercepts of a line. Suppose the x-intercept of a line is a
and the y-intercept is b , where a 0 and b 0. Then the line passes through the points
(a, 0) and (0, b). Using two-point form:

y− y 1 y 2− y 1
= Two-point form
x−x 1 x 2−x1

y−0 b−0
= Substitution
x−a 0−a
y b
= Simplify
x−a −a
bx−ab=−ay Multiply both sides by x−a and -a

bx +ay=ab Adding both sides by ay and ab

x y
+ =1 Intercept form
a b
Example
Find the equation of the line whose x- and y-intercepts are 2 and 5 respectively.
In the given, the x-intercept a=2 and y-intercept b=5
Using the x- and y- intercept form:
x y
+ =1
a b
x y
+ =1 Substitute the given
2 5
5 x+ 2 y =10 Multiply the equation by its LCD

−5
y= x+5 Slope-intercept form
