COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course offers theory and application of management information-processing systems that support the activities of an
organization. The course emphasizes application of tools used in data analytics, process models, and business systems.
Management Information Systems concepts and foundational theories are examined to provide context to the practical exercises.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1 Describe the composition and evolution of information systems and their use in supporting business
processes and business decision making.

• Distinguish information systems from information technology.
• Map business processes.
• Explain the role of information systems in business processes and decision making.
• Describe some of the current trends in information systems.
The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Discuss the relationship between information systems, organizational strategies and industry
structure.
• Assess how information systems can create competitive advantage in organizations.
• Discuss the challenges that different organizational personnel face in analyzing and using
information for decision making and problem solving.
• Apply data concepts in management decision making.
• Justify business activities using business intelligence tools and data warehouses.

• Discuss the relationship between organizational strategy, information systems planning and
investments.
• Explain information systems governance.
• Discuss the changing and emerging roles of IT personnel in organizations.
• Assess the different options to acquiring information systems in organizations.
• Discuss ethical, security and privacy issues in information systems.
• Identify risk exposures associated with managing an information system.
4 Illustrate the cross-functional nature of business processes and use of enterprise resource planning
(ERP) software to support business processes.
The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Explain the cross-functional nature of business processes and the use of enterprise systems to
effectively and efficiently complete business processes.
• Discuss how enterprise systems support integrated business processes and business
organizations' competitive strategy.
• Describe the integration of support activities such as Accounting and Human Resources in ERP
systems.
• Describe the role of SCM and CRM systems in achieving business objectives.
The following concepts, skills, and issues are used to support this Outcome:
• Apply normalization techniques to organize data.
• Model data to solve business problems using spreadsheet software.
• Apply machine learning algorithms using analytical software.
• Apply spreadsheet engineering principles, including the use of macros
• Consolidate data using productivity software.

All JR Shaw School of Business students are required to possess a computing device, either a desktop or laptop, that will meet the
minimum technology requirements. This will enable you to engage in our digital learning environment and to participate in online
assessments. In addition to the minimum technology requirements, your computing device must also support both audio and
video streaming technologies and, as a result, must include hardware (either internal or external) such as a microphone and
webcam. A broadband (high speed) internet connection is also required.

• Processor: Intel i Series 4th Gen or Better or AMD Ryzen Series
• Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB RAM recommended
• Solid State Drive recommended or Hard Drive (minimum free space 15 GB)
• Display resolution: 1366 x 768 minimum, 1920 x 1080 recommended
• Wi-Fi connection: Wireless N, AC or better
• Antivirus Protection: Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are recommended to protect your device and are pre-
installed on your Windows computer
