Detailed LP Order of Operations

1) The document outlines a mathematics lesson plan for 5th grade students on the topic of order of operations, or PMDAS/GMDAS. 2) It includes learning objectives, materials, procedures for the lesson involving a video, example problems, and assessments. 3) The key points are that students will learn to follow the proper order of operations by first solving inside parentheses, then multiplying/dividing from left to right, and finally adding/subtracting from left to right.

HOLY TRINITY COLLEGE OF GENERAL SANTOS CITY

School of Basic Education

Grade School Education Program

Grade 5 Mathematics

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of lesson, the pupils should be able to:
 State, explain, and interpret the PMDAS or GMDAS rule; and
 Simplify a series of operations on whole numbers involving more than two
operations using the GMDAS rule.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Order of Operations

References: Grade 5 Mathematics book, Google, and YouTube

Materials: Book, laptop/computer, external tools, pictures and ppt.
Process skills: Listening, Identifying, Logical Thinking and Understanding

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity
A. Session Routine
a. Greetings
GoodHoly, My Little Archimedes! GoodHoly, Teacher! GoodHoly
classmates it’s nice to see you
again.
How are you this morning? We are good teacher.

Very good!

b. Prayer
Let’s have a prayer before we start.

(Oh, Most Holy Trinity Prayer…)

Holy Trinity, One God. Have mercy on us!

c. Attendance
The teacher will call the names of the pupils in
alphabetical order.
B. Review
Okay class, do you still remember our topic last Yes, Teacher Jess!
week?

What was it? Our topic last week was all

about GCF and LCM.

Wow! Very good!

C. Motivation
Now class, I am going to present a video. I want you
all to watch and listen attentively, okay? Yes, Teacher Jess!

(Presenting the video related to the topic)

Mathematics is not about numbers, equations,

computations, or algorithms: it is about
understanding.
- William Paul Thurston, American
mathematician

D. Lesson Proper
According to what you have seen in the video,
we need to know the order of operations. Right? Yes, Teacher Jess!

So, our topic for today is all about Order of

Operations.

Let us Get Ready! Open your book on page 48

and answer Take A Look Back Letter A in two (The pupils are answering the
minutes. given activity)

A. Add or subtract.

1. 198
2. 159
3. 33
4. 1479
5. 723

Very Good!

Who among you here have an idea what is

PMDAS or GMDAS? PMDAS stands for Parenthesis,
Multiplication, Division, Addition
and Subtraction while GMDAS
is Grouping, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and
Subtraction.

Wow, very good!

But, do you all know what are the basic operations? Yes, Teacher Jess!

So, what are the basic operations? The basic operations are
addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division.

Wow, Very Good!

PMDAS or GMDAS is a mnemonic to easily

remember the order of operations.

Rules on Order of Operations under PMDAS or

GMDAS.

1. Do the operations inside the parenthesis,

brackets and braces.
2. Multiply and Divide in the order in which they
occur (from left to right).
3. Add and Subtract in the order in which they
occur (from left to right).

Example:
1. 25 ÷ 5 × 3 + 7 – 5
Step 1: Divide
25 ÷ 5 = 5
5×3+7–5

Step 2: Multiply
5 × 3 = 15
15 + 7 – 5

Step 3: Add and Subtract

15 + 7 = 22
22 – 5 = 17

2. 60 ÷ (5 x 2) + 4 – 10

What is the first step that we need to do to solve this Pupil 1: We need to solve the
equation? numbers inside the parenthesis,
Teacher.

Excellent! What is the product of 5 x 2? Pupil 2: The answer is 10,

Teacher.
Very Good!

Step 1: Remove the parenthesis

60 ÷ (5 x 2) + 4 – 10
5 x 2 = 10
60 ÷ 10 + 4 – 10

What do you think is our new equation after we Pupil 3: 60 ÷ 10 + 4 – 10 is our

removed the parenthesis? new equation, Teacher.

Very Good!

Step 2: Divide
60 ÷ 10 + 4 – 10
6 + 4 – 10
10 – 10
0

3. 2 {3+ [6(5+5) +16]} Pupil 4: Teacher Jess, how can

we solve that equation?

First, we need to solve the numbers inside the

parenthesis.

What is the number inside the parenthesis? Pupil 5: 5 + 5, Teacher.

Very Good!

5 + 5 = 10, our new equation is 2 {3+ [6(10) +16]}

After solving the numbers inside the parenthesis, we

will solve the numbers inside the brackets and braces.

6 x 10 = 60, our new equation is 2 {3+ [60+16]}

60 + 16 = 76, 2 {3+ [76]} is our new equation.
2 {3+ 76}
2 {79}
237

4. 6 [8 - 1 x (8-7) + 12 ÷ 6 x 2]
6 [8 – 1 (1) + 12 ÷ 6 x 2]
6 [8 – 1 + 12 ÷ 6 x 2]
6 [8 – 1 + 2 x 2]
6 [8 – 1 + 4]
6 [ 7 + 4]
6 [11]
66

5. 4 {2 (9 – 8 + 3) + [ (81 ÷ 9) – 5]} ÷ (18 – 5 x 2)

What should we do to solve this equation? Pupil 6: Teacher, we will solve

the number inside the
parenthesis first.
Very Good!

We have 9 – 8 + 3, 81 ÷ 9 and 5 x 2
9 – 8 = 1 + 3 is 4. 81 ÷ 9 = 9 and 5 x 2 =
10

Our new equation is 4 {2 (4) + [9 – 5]} ÷ (18 – 10)

We will multiply 2 x 4 and the answer is 8.

4 {8 + 4} ÷ 8
4 {12} ÷ 8
48 ÷ 8

E. Generalization

How to perform the order of operations? 1. Do the operations inside

the parenthesis, brackets
and braces.
2. Multiply and Divide in the
order in which they occur
(from left to right).
3. Add and Subtract in the
order in which they occur
(from left to right).

IV. Evaluation

The teacher will give a book activity “Solve on Your

Own” letter A on page 50 to assess the learning of the
pupils. It will be answered within 10 minutes only;
afterwards, checking will be done.

Checking:
A. Perform the indicated operations.

1. 31
2. 33
3. 20
4. 3
5. 95
6. 12
7. 1055
8. 9
9. 35
10. 2

V. Assignment

The pupils will answer page 51 (More Practice), and the

Quiz 4 in the Schoology.
