RECAP
A factual sentence states what can happen and can be
proven to be true. It can be verified with pieces of evidence and is
provable, observable, and measurable. On the other hand, an
opinionated sentence is based on a person’s own point of view and
may not be proven. It is based on someone’s thoughts, feelings and
7
understanding. Words and phrases such as I think, I believe, in my
opinion, maybe, perhaps, best/worst, probably, apparently among
others may be used in stating an opinion.
LESSON
Prediction is what a person thinks will happen. It is a forecast,
but not just about the weather. It is a statement about the future
that is sometimes based on facts or evidence.
Predicting is an important reading technique. It allows you to
use information from the text to anticipate what will happen in the
story. When making predictions, you can guess what will happen
based on your prior knowledge.
Likewise, always confirm your prediction using the text that will
help you understand what is happening earlier.
Let’s practice doing few predictions!
Mark and Dave were twins. They were both participants in
the school program. They were exhausted from the whole day
practice for tomorrow’s presentation.
➢ What do you think happened on the next day?
Possible answers: I think…
a. They woke up late. b. They got sick.
➢ What evidence tells us this?
They were exhausted from the whole day practice.
8
Now, let us put the answers in the graphic organizer.
MY PREDICTION TEXT EVIDENCE CAN I CONFIRM
(I Think) (Because) MY PREDICTION?
They woke up They were exhausted YES

practice.
They got sick. They were exhausted YES
from the whole day NO
practice.
Are your answers always correct? (No) Why? (They are only
guesses which we called prediction.)
How can you make good predictions? What helps you give
the possible event to happen in the story? (We guess/predict based
on the given clues in the text.
We can confirm your prediction as we read the next passage.
Now, let’s continue!
Mark and Dave hurried across the road to school. They walked
as fast as they could. The program was about to begin. “It is almost
7 o’clock in the morning!” Mark exclaimed. But instead of running,
Dave paused and stood upright, staring at the flag as the national
anthem was sung. Meanwhile, Mark continued walking. He was
surprised when Mrs. Curilan, their guidance advocate, stopped
him and patted his shoulder.
Which prediction is confirmed? (They woke up late) (Read 1st
to 4th lines of the passage)

They got sick. They were YES

➢ What do you think Mark did when Mrs. Curilan stopped and
patted his shoulder?
Possible answers: I think…
a. He apologized. b. He ran away.
➢ What evidence tells us this?
Mrs. Curilan, their guidance advocate, stopped and patted
his shoulder.
Do this in your graphic organizer.

Which prediction is confirmed, He apologized or He ran away?
Let’s confirm it on the last passage. At the same time, let’s find out
how does the story end? Then, fill in the graphic organizer below.
Mark could not sleep at home that night. He promised to
himself that it will never happen again.

➢ What do you think Mark did after the incident?
Possible answers:
a. He had changed. b. He was mad.
➢ What evidence tells us this? He promised to himself that it will
never happen again.
Let’s put your answers in My Prediction graphic organizer
below.

again.
He was mad. He promised to himself YES
that it will never happen √ NO
again
Can you confirm your prediction (he had changed) even if
there is no subsequent passage to read? Yes, because that is the
signal for the end of the story.
By this time, you can confirm your prediction by reading the
previous text that supports your prediction based on the previous
event to support your ending.
11
However, in creating your own ending, it is important that you
know the series of events and main character/s. You can rewrite
the ending starting at any point in the story you selected.
Now, can you give another ending from the previous story we
studied? Let’s try this question.
What do you think would be the ending of the story if Mark
followed what Dave did?
I think …. _______________________________________________
Guided Practice
A. Read few passages below. Draw a happy face if the
prediction is confirmed, and a sad face if it’s not.
I. Raji was bored from the three-month quarantine.
What do you think would happen next?
Possible answers: I think…
A. He would stay at home. B. He would go out.
MY

(Because) MY PREDICTION?
(I Think)
He would stay Raji was bored from the YES

He would go Raji was bored from the YES
out. three-month quarantine. NO
Which prediction is correct? Let’s find out the answer.
II. His uncle called him up for an errand. “At long last!” he
thought. He quickly carried his bag, rode on his
motorcycle without a helmet.
The correct prediction is He would go out.
12
The text evidence is “Raji was bored from the three-month
quarantine.”
Have you confirmed your prediction? (Read 2nd passage)

(I Think)
1. He would Raji was bored from the

2. He would Raji was bored from the

That's correct! The answer to the 1st prediction (He would stay
at home.) is sad face ( ) because it was not confirmed. The 2nd
prediction (He would go out.) has been confirmed so the answer is
a happy face ( ).
Now, Let’s continue!
What do you think would happen next?
Possible answers:
A. He was caught by the police. B. He was lost.
Let’s find out the answer.

13
Which of your predictions is correct?
The correct prediction is? He was caught by the police.
Text Evidence: He quickly carried his bag, rode on his

That's right! The answer to the 3rd prediction (He was caught
by the police.) is happy face ( )because it was confirmed in the
3rd passage. While the 4th prediction (he lost.) has not been
confirmed so the answer is a sad face ( ) .
Choose the letter of your answer.
What do you think would be a possible ending if the traffic officer
neglected his duty?
a. Raji had an accident and was hurt.
b. Raji was chosen to be an exemplary citizen.

WRAP-UP
When making predictions, the readers foresee what will come
next in the text, based on their prior knowledge. This gives them a
reason to read or listen, as they confirm or reject their predictions.
A confirmed prediction using text will help the readers understand
what is happening ahead.
Meanwhile, in creating your own ending, it is important that
you know the story sequence, the main character and the events.
With this, you can rewrite the ending starting at any point in the story
you have chosen.
VALUING
Patriotism is love for the nation. Filipino heroes proved this by
sacrificing their lives for us to enjoy freedom. Patriotism can also be
shown by obeying the law, caring for one's countrymen, valuing the
environment and respecting one's identity as a Filipino.
How do you show your love for the country? Draw a picture of
yourself in the box below doing any acts that show patriotism.
