Rostata: An unexpected pandemic awoke the whole world. The normal life that people used
to live was no longer allowed for the meantime and too many restrictions were imposed.
Alcohols, masks, face shields and other protective elements, particularly antibacterial soaps
have surged in supply due to in-demand needs for them. But, there is something in these
products’ composition that the naked eye can't perceive. These are tiny particles that can
harm and eventually damage life on Earth. These particles are called “microplastics''.
Microplastics are produced when a product like the ones mentioned, are disposed of and
broken down, resulting in small molecules that take between 450 to 1,000 years before they
degrade completely. They are so dangerous because they increase the risk of chronic
diseases such as cancer. In addition, it slowly damages skin, organs and even our DNAs. As
animals intake these harmful substances, humans in the food chain would also be affected.
Hence, commercially famous products such as the antibacterial soaps you see on TV and
personally use in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic can be hazards to the environment's
cleanliness when not disposed properly.
Partosa: We, the chemical engineers of JJPN, have decided that it’s time to make a change.
We have worked on producing a soap that balances the need for hygiene and the society’s
need for a cleaner environment.
Pacres: We introduce to you the “SOALA Soap”. We have made this soap for the masses.
Javierto: This means that the consumers would be sustainably cleaning their hands with a
soap that is very eco-friendly and would not harm the environment after being flushed in
drains.
Juinio: We practice practicality and ingenuity and so our product uses natural and hygienic
ingredients that would surely help in fighting the virus. In addition, it also has a unique
design.
Navales: The design could make a person not only wonder how it can be used, but also
have fun in a way that can motivate them to wash their hands more since it is designed to
reach in between one’s five fingers and covers the palms and the back of the hand.
Secondly, the SOALA Soap has a unique shape and a practical design, therefore urging
people to practice good hygiene.
Lastly, to fight off the environmental issues about microplastics, we got into the root of the
problem. We used newspapers instead of the normal wrapper which can be seen for
everyday products, which is of course, plastic. Newspapers are easily biodegradable and
can also be reused and recycled.
Javierto: To show a comparison of the SOALA soap and commercially seen soaps, we have
used the famous brand of “Bioderm '' and one of their soaps. Bioderm protects from germs
that can cause illnesses & body odor. But, the problem is this product of theirs is mass
produced in an uneconomical way. Why is this a problem you ask? Well, there isn’t a
problem about mass production, but they disregard the trash they are producing along with
their product. According to a research in 2018, containers that are used in cosmetics make
up a huge portion of solid waste, amounting to 8.2 million tons of garbage every single year.
And to think that comes within just a mass production of one single product is alarming. The
containers of the product as well are made out of non-biodegradable products such as
plastic. Personal care products even have these microplastics inside of them, making the
product harmful. As said earlier, major solid wastes are formed because of massive waste
and non biodegradable items are making it worse.
Juino: How does SOALA soap take lead as it benefits both our earth and all its living
creatures, than BIODERM? What factors does the SOALA soap, our eco-friendly product,
have over, BIODERM a mass produced Commercial Personal Care Product?
Pacres: Eco-friendliness
● Soala Soap
- Ingredients are naturally made and when it is reduced to small particles it
won’t harm the environment as the ingredients are safe for any earthly
species.
● Bioderm
- The chemicals that are used to produce the soap such as sodium and the
chemicals to create its fragrance can eventually lead to damaging the
environment, as it goes deep in our drains.
Partosa: Microplastics
● Soala Soap
- Has no (0%) microplastics due to the usage of mild ingredients, considering
its production process. That makes use of used newspapers, glass and wood
wares. Even during the acquisition of the products the team doesn’t involve
any plastic waste.
● Bioderm
- Made from different chemicals resulting to usage of microplastics, with its
ingredients shipped from places that cause more plastics and the production
that would even add more plastics being used
Juino: But why is microplastic so redundant in this video? what does it really do and how
does BIODERM a common antibacterial soap has to do with it?
One, All these small particles of plastic even microplastics never fully
decompose and are literally everywhere: in water, soil, and air - affecting everyone
here on the planet.
Two, In 2014, it was discovered that polar ice appears to be full of microplastics -
even a.
Three, Personal Haelth Care Products - such as antibacterial soaps, have been renowned
as one of the Seven major sources of primary microplastics
Rostata: Like Bioderm, SOALA Soap also intends to protect the user from germs and
diseases. However, the difference between these two products also comes within its
chemical composition. SOALA soap is an environmentally friendly product, thus, it mainly
uses vegetable oils as alternative antibacterial ingredients such as coconut oil, peppermint
oil, etc. Whereas, the Bioderm soap mainly consist of ingredients with advanced chemicals
such as sodium palmate, titanium dioxide, phenoxyethanol, butylated hydroxytoluene, etc.,
wherein studies found that one of its ingredient which is ‘titanium dioxide’ can cause eyes,
nose, and throat irritation. In addition, during the 2017 French Government’s scientific
assessment, it was found out that titanium dioxide is a carcinogen, which means when
inhaled it has detrimental effects on the human respiratory system. Other ingredients such
as phenoxyethanol can also cause brain and nervous system problems due to its
neurotoxicity which was concluded in a 1999 German research. Moreover, SOALA soap
focuses as well in abstaining from the usage of plastics by using newspaper as its
packaging. Newspapers, as previously mentioned, are biodegradable therefore lessening
the amount of solid trash created. Not to mention that the product is made with tools and
ingredients that don’t produce plastics. Good hygiene is known to be the number one blocker
for viruses entering bodies. The researchers see to it that the product adheres to the SDG’s
four goals on good health and well-being, life below water, life on land, and responsible
consumption and production.
Javierto: Therefore, using our product can make you free from dirt and bacteria and also be
friendly to the environment as you are producing less waste. We should all remember that
our small wastes - even microplastics - are grouped together to create huge and unwanted
piles of garbage. We should focus solely on reducing these wastes as microplastics are a
large and dangerous problem that the world has to face.
