OVERVIEW:
Once we have a thorough understanding of polynomials we can look at rational functions that are a
quotient of two polynomials. These rational functions have certain behaviors, and students are often asked to
find their limits, or to graph them. Their graphs can have different characteristics depending on whether the
numerator function has degree less than, equal to, or greater than the denominator function.

DISCUSSION:
Recalling Rational Expression: Since we are done assessing what you already know about the lesson to take, let’s look at
the following expressions and see if you can classify them as a rational expression.

1
x2 +3 x +2 1 x2 + 4 x−3 √ x +1
1. 2. 2 3. 4. x
5. +2
x+4 3x 2 x 3−1 x−2
Which among the five expressions above are rational and not? Can you explain why? Read the following definitions
to answer these questions.

Definition #1: A rational expression is an expression that can be written or expressed as a ratio of two polynomials.
Definition #2: A polynomial function pof degree n is a function that can be written in the form
p ( x ) =an x n+ an−1 x n−1 +a n−2 x n−2+ …+a1 x +a 0
where a 0 , a1 … an ϵ R , an ≠ 0∧n is a positive integer
Example: p ( x ) =3 x2 +2 x−1
f ( x )=3 these are all polynomials
g ( x )=2 x −1
p ( x ) =x5 + 0.5 x 2 +2 x −10

Now that we have defined these two terms, can you now tell which among the expressions given above are
rational expressions? Let’s see if you’re right with your answers!

Distinguishing Rational Function, Equation & Inequality

We have tackled rational expressions and polynomials because this are useful information that we need to
proceed with our lesson of distinguishing a rational function, equation & inequality. Use the table below to help you
how to distinguish among rational equations, rational inequalities and rational functions.

Rational Equation Rational Inequality Rational Function

Definition An equation involving rational An inequality involving rational A function of the form

(Note: Equation means a (Note: Inequality means the f ( x )= where p ( x ) ∧q( x )
q( x )
statement/expression that the relation between two are polynomial functions and
values of two mathematical expressions that are not equal, q ( x )is not a zero function or
expressions are equal; indicated employing a sign such as ≠ “not cannot be equal to zero. The

values of x where q ( x) ≠ 0.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
Determine whether the given is a “rational function”, “rational equation”, “rational inequality” or “none of these”
then explain why. Write your answers on the space provided. (2pts each)

CLOSURE/SYNTHESIS:
In this module, we have learned about the following:
1. A rational expression is an expression that can be written or expressed as a ratio of two polynomials.
2. An equation involving rational expressions.
3. An inequality involving rational expressions.
p( x )
4. A function of the form f ( x )= where p ( x ) ∧q( x ) are polynomial functions and q ( x )is not a zero function
q(x )
or cannot be equal to zero. The domain of f (x) is the set of all values of x where q ( x) ≠ 0.
