General Mathematics Quarter 1 Week 6: Expectations

The document provides instructions for learners to complete a module on exponential functions. It includes a pre-test to assess their current understanding, a review of concepts from the previous lesson, and an introduction to the new topic which uses COVID-19 as an example of exponential growth. Examples are given to show how to graph exponential functions and describe their key properties, such as being always positive with a horizontal asymptote at the x-axis and a y-intercept of 1. Learners are expected to represent exponential functions in different forms and determine their domains, ranges, intercepts, and asymptotes.

Looking Back at your Lesson

From the previous lesson, you have learned to represent real-life situations using exponential functions;
distinguish between exponential function, exponential equation, and exponential inequality; and solve
exponential equations and inequalities. The following is a short review on the previous lessons.

 An exponential expression is an expression of the form 𝑎 ∙ 𝑏 𝑥−𝑐 + 𝑑, where 𝑏 > 0, 𝑏 ≠ 1.

Exponential Equation Exponential Inequality Exponential
Function
Definition An equation involving An inequality involving Function of the
exponential exponential form 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥
expressions expressions where b>0, 𝑏 ≠ 1
Example 2
4𝑥 −2 = 16 5𝑥 > 25 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = (2.6)𝑥

 One-to-one Property of Exponential Functions

If 𝑥1 ≠ 𝑥2 , then 𝑏 𝑥1 = 𝑏 𝑥2 . Conversely, if 𝑏 𝑥1 = 𝑏 𝑥2 then 𝑥1 ≠ 𝑥2 .
 Property of Exponential Inequalities
If 𝑏 > 1, then the exponential function 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 is increasing for all x. This means that 𝑏 𝑥 < 𝑏 𝑦 if and only if
𝑥 < 𝑦.
If 0 < 𝑏 < 1, then the exponential function 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 is decreasing for all x. This means that 𝑏 𝑥 > 𝑏 𝑦 if and only
if 𝑥 < 𝑦.
 Zero as an exponent:
If 𝑎 ≠ 0, then 𝑎0 = 1
 Negative Exponent: If n is any integer, and 𝑎 and 𝑏 are not equal to zero, then
1 𝑎 𝑏
𝑎−𝑛 = (𝑎)𝑛 and (𝑏 )−𝑛 = (𝑎)𝑛

Introduction of the Topic

How did the COVID-19 spread in our community? This pandemic, which was caused by this contagious
virus, made big changes to our lives because of the extremely fast rate of contagion.

Exponential growth may be a possible model in representing this kind of pandemic, like how previous
outbreaks have also affected also the world. We can fully master these concepts by looking first at the important
properties of exponential functions as one of the topics in this subject.

From the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥) = ( ) , the following properties can be proven for every
2
exponential function.

Properties of Exponentials Functions and their graphs

Let 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 , 𝑏 > 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 ≠ 1

1. The domain is the set of real numbers,

(−∞, ∞).
2. The range is the set of positive real numbers,
(0, ∞).
3. If 𝑏 > 1, f is an increasing exponential
function. If 0 < 𝑏 < 1, f is decreasing
exponential function.
4. The function passes through the point (0,1)
because 𝑓(0) = 𝑏 0 = 1.
5. The y-intercept is 1. There is no x-intercept.
6. The graph approaches but does not reach the
x-axis. The x-axis is the horizontal asymptote
(𝑦 = 0). There is no vertical asymptote.

graphs. Find the properties of the functions.

ℎ(𝑥) = 4𝑥 rises faster than does 𝑔(𝑥) = 3𝑥 as x
increases while 𝑔(𝑥) = 3𝑥 rises faster than
does 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 as x increases.

the spread of virus as slow as possible.

As a student in our city, you are task to analyze the development of the cases in a monthly basis. The

1. Plot the points of the given data. Connect the dots in forming smooth curve or graph.
2. Describe how the number of cases of COVID-19 in our city changes.
3. Compare the number of cases monthly. Does it continue to increase or decrease? (Hint: Subtract the
number of cases from the next month to the previous month. Divide the difference from the answers
between the two months.)
4. At present, does the number of cases lessen or greater from the data shown?
5. As a student of student, how will you minimize or lessen the number of cases of COVID-19? Explain.

Remember
An exponential function can be written as 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒃𝒙 where b > 0, 𝑏 ≠ 1 and x is any real
number. In the equation 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑏 𝑥 , b is a constant called the base and x is an independent
variable called the exponent.
