Shoplifting, a common phenomenon in retail stores

In today’s world, not only in Canada, but also in almost every developed and developing

countries, shoplifting often leads the retail stores owners to incur some unavoidable losses;

albeit, it is not ethical. The consumers are willingly engaged in this type of issues due to high

price of goods, economic pressure and also low risks associated with it. Sometimes, it is also

found that the negligence of sales person is also involved.

Whatever the reasons behind, the retail owners have to take care of this issue very seriously. The

following measures may be taken to prevent the problem

1. Some changes in current policy with deterrence technique such as asking the accused to

have an in house solution before calling police.

2. Increasing the CCTV camera coverage the housekeeping.

3. Offering the consumer with some easy purchase options, such as 10% of on buying over

1000 cad.

4. Train the employees to be more aware especially in peak sales times, such as Christmas,

when there is a plausibility of having more consumers.

5. Using electronic security tags.

Phyllis can choose any or all of them to reduce the shoplifting in his unit.
