GRADE 11 – HOMEROOM GUIDANCE – QUARTER 1 MODULE 3

Recall a personal experience where respect was shown to you and an observed scenario
where discrimination was evident.

Answer:

•Respect was shown to me when...

a) People didn't care about on how I look and my personality.

b) When people didn't based on the level of intelligence to become friends with me.

•I think Discrimination was evident when...

a) People tried to mock me just because of my physical appearance.

b) When someone uses my gender as an excuse to not help a guy on carrying a pile of books.

PROCESSING QUESTION:

•How do you describe your feelings and thoughts about respect and discrimination? And why?

- Respect is when you agree with the person's opinion or a belief that seems to symbolize that
person. While Discrimination is judging others based on their sexual orientation, religion,
gender, age and etc.

- I feel that discrimination is one of the leading cause of people having low self esteem. Why?
Because you’re pointing out someone's flaws or insecurity /lies that you shouldn't be. Even
though they're sensitive or not, you shouldn't still make their appearance as an excuse to
question why they look like that.

•When do you know if respect is being shown? If there is discrimination? Cite some
indicators.

- I would easily identify respect if someone interacts with others fairly. While in discrimination, it
is when you're making their appearance or abilities to not interact with you. For short, not
treating them fairly. For example, you went to a grocery store and saw a kid with a disability. you
laughed at him without knowing that he has autism. in addition, you're not just judging him.
Rather, you're proving to others that you don't deserve the respect that you wanted. And an
example for respect is when you have a friend with a different religion and didn't instruct him/her
to stop believing on their spiritual leaders.

•Is it possible to replace discrimination with respect? How?

2

- Yes, it is. Instead of being rude to someone younger than you just because the kid is being
noisy, why not counsel him/her? With this, the kid would learn something and won't do it again.
And also, learn on how to be sensitive and know your limits on saying opinions. We all know
that stating your opinion is allowed but you should know your boundaries. a single word can hurt
somebody so it is best to be careful with the words that you'll use to avoid any hindrance.

RESPECT WAS SHOWN TO ME WHEN...

 I feel that my side was taken well.

 I get the chance to voice out my side.
 I am given the space I wanted.
 People will respect you if you show your respect for them too.
 When they let you finish when you're talking.
 When they know their limits.
 When they give you privacy and not pushing you to do something when you don't want
to.
 Respect was shown to me when I can also respect others.

There are a lot of ways that one can show respect to other people. And a person who is able to
show these ways is truly a person that is worthy of being treasured. Moreover, on the flip side, it
is also very important that we possess it in ourselves. It is not enough that other people are
showing respect to us. We have also to possess respect in ourselves in order for us to be able
to show it to other people also.

I think discrimination was evident when

I think discrimination was evident when their ethnicity. People may be discriminated against
based on their race, gender, age, and sexual or orientation.
When you’re poor, because everyone thinks when your poor you don't know anything, they
discriminate you by not giving you what you should deserve treat you as is you’re a trash so i
think discrimination is evident when you’re poor.

I discrimination was evident if only you was doing something bad in the eye of the beholder.

You can write any reason, such as "race, gender, preference, and social origin". Although, I
suggest you wouldn't put anything controversial.

4.) They are saying hurtful things to me or my friends.

5.) I am pressured by my friends to mock someone else.

Processing questions:

1.) In my "I respect others when" answers, I notice that I am listing or enumerating the ways I
can spread positivity or empathy. While in "I may be discriminating others when" answers, I
observe that I am heavily relying on the situations or other person's behavior.

2.) Aside from the societal standpoint, I think that my manners were influenced by my
environment and the way my parents raised me.

3.) I can build a harmonious relationship with others by being kind and having basic human
decency. Other than that, communication and understanding are the keys on expressing your
interest with them.

What do you notice with your answer?

1. I can describe my feelings and thoughts about respect by simply accept what they want and
what they believe and in discrimination I am not comfortable with it because I believe that we
are perfect in the way we are. We don’t need to discriminate others instead accept them
because they also deserve to be respected and accept for who they are.

What influence the manner that you deal with people?

2. Respect is being shown as simple as when you talk to elders with manners and in
discrimination it will be shown if the person has its flaws and imperfection and it has seen by
people, judging it without knowing to reason behind it that's totally discrimination.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED:

1. What are your experiences of showing respect to people like your family,
friends, and classmates?
2. How do we keep harmony with others especially during this time of pandemic?
3. How did the pandemic affect the way you treat people? How do you interact
with other people?

Answer:

1. Experiences such as using "po" and "opo" to any member of the family older than me, asking
for blessing from my grandparents, listening while the other is talking and accepting differences
in our opinion and beliefs.

2. Don't forget to communicate. Communication can still be done without having to face them
personally. We can use other ways such as social media to check on other people to tell them
that we care and we're here for them.

3. We became more cautious when it comes to interacting with others. As long as we want to
hug, kiss or be close to them, we should observe proper distancing. But it shouldn't be a reason
to treat others differently or forget about them. The interaction should still be warm and sincere
but with safety.

My experiences of showing respect to people like my family, friends, and classmates:

 In my house, I am always taught to respect everyone be it, my family members and

friends or classmates.
 I also give respect to everyone I know. I must say that I received the same from others
as well.
 There is always some exception and I have also faced it. Some of my relatives whom I
respected a lot, they did not give the same in return.
 But, I never disrespect anyone who disrespects me and this is my nature.
