Elements of Arts - visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition (combination/arrangement of elements)

Elements of Art
Color • Can be man-made
• Consist of 3 properties (hue, value, & intensity)

Value • Color’s lightness of darkness


• Can be warm, cool, monochromatic, & complementary

Line • Continous mark that when enclosed creates a shape


• short, wavy, straight, thick, zig-zagged, curly

Shape • Created when lines join to enclose an area


• Solid, outline, geometric, organic

Space • distance between, around, within the piece components (shapes, lines,
etc.)

Form • 3-dimensional object or shapes (2d)


• geometric/abstract (sculpture - 3d form)

Texture • surface quality of artwork (how rough or smooth it is)


• rough, smooth, silky, shiny, fuzzy, etc.
• real (actual texture) - feels just as they appear
Principles of art - represents how artist uses the elements of art to convey his/her intention/story (The use of these
principles can help determine whether a painting is successful, and whether or not the painting is finished)

Contrast • The use of art elements to show contrast/opposite of these elements

Emphasis • The use of art elements to draw attention to/emphasize a certain are of
an artwork

Balance • The use of art elements that renders/show visual stability


• What’s on the left is on the right

Movement • Optical illusion


• Forces the viewer’s gaze to move around the artwork than looking at a
single point

Pattern • repetition of art elements

Unity • Sum of the principles of art

Rhythm • Arrangement of shapes that creates an underlying beat. Similar to the


ryhtm of music (notes and sounds) but in arts (colors and shapes)

What happens when you combine both principle and elements of art?

You’ll produce a finish product of composition called artwork
