M1010 Module 1 Study Guide
Lesson 1. Plot points on a coordinate plane and name the quadrant in which a
1.1
point is located. (See pg 73 in book)
Example 1: Plot and label the following points on the coordinate plane.
Example 2: Draw a rectangular coordinate system and label the quadrants. Then graph the
following points in the xy-plane and determine which quadrant each point lies in.
Example 1: Does (2, −3) satisfy the equation 𝑥 − 4𝑦 = −10? Explain your answer.
Example 2: Determine whether (1,2) is a solution to the equation 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 12
Example 1: Graph 𝑦 = √𝑥 + 4.

Example 2: Graph 𝑦 = 2 𝑥 − 1
Example 3: Graph 𝑦 = |𝑥| − 2
Example 4: Graph 𝑥 1 + 1
Example 1: Given the following sets of ordered pairs. Find the domain and range and
determine if the set is a function
a. 𝑓(0)
b. 𝑓(−1)
c. 𝑓(−2)
4. Find domain & range of the graph of a function using interval notation.

Example 1: Example 2:
Example 3: Example 4:

Example 2: 𝑦 = −2𝑥 − 1
Example 2: 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3
4. Given a graph, determine the slope and write the equation of the line
(pg 98, 107)
Example 1: Example 2:
5. Graph horizontal and vertical lines (pg 106-108).
Example 1: 𝑦 = −5
Example 2: 𝑥 = 1
6. Find intercepts and graph a linear equation in standard form (pg 110).
Example 1: Describe what x-intercept and y-intercepts are and how you would find them for
the equation 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 1. Then find the intercepts and graph.
Lesson 1. Given a point and the slope of a line, write the linear equation in slope-
1.4
intercept form (page 120).
Example 1: Write the equation of a line that contains the point (1,3) and has a slope of -2/3.
Example 2: Write the equation of a line that contains the point (-1,0) and has a slope of ¼.
Example 3: Write the equation of a line that contains the point (1, 4) and has an undefined
slope
Example 4: Write the equation of the line with slope of 0 and passes through the point
(-2,-3).
2. Find an equation of the line given two points (pg 121)
Example 1: Write an equation in slope-intercept form of the line passing through the points
(-1,5) and (6,3).
Example 2: Write the equation in slope-intercept form of a line that goes through (1,3) and
(4,9)
Example 1: Mike is a vacuum salesman. His monthly salary 𝑀(𝑣) is given by the
linear function 𝑀(𝑣) = 240 + 150𝑣 where 𝑣 is the number of vacuums sold. How
many vacuums does he need to sell to make $7140?
Example 2: Using the same function from Example 1, how much will Mike make if he
sells 14 vacuums?
4. Find the slope of perpendicular and parallel lines and write equations
(pages 108-109).
Example 1: Consider the equation 2x-5y =-15. Find the slope of the line that would
be parallel and perpendicular to the line.
Example 2: Write the equation of the line that’s perpendicular to 𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 1 and
passes through the point (3,2).
