LESSON 1: A Wonderful Heart

TARGET

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

 note significant details;

 infer the meaning of unfamiliar words (compound) based on given context clues.
 infer the theme of a literary text;
 self-correct when reading; and
 appreciate the universal message a material conveys.

OPTIMIZE

Can you identify at least 10 fun activities you do after school? Write your answer in the space provided.

Read again your answer. Can you see how the given activities would need you to apply reading skills?

Recreational activities

School functions
READING Important errands

Outdoor adventures

CAPTURE

A wise reader knows what details to look for. Can you name different ways on how to identify important
details? Share what you know about the following and how they are related to identifying and noting
important details.

1. Repetition or repeated ideas

2. Definition
3. Demonstration and examples
4. Implicit details
5. Explicit details

NAVIGATE

On Note-Taking

Ask your parent or guardian to read to you the poem below. As you listen, try to write words that you
think are important and will help you understand the poem. Then, answer the questions that follow.
Golden Heart

Grandeur and gold, no doubt attract attention

But a healthy body and a mind at ease, I dare tell you,
sparkle longer and brighter in endless perpetuation

Simple pleasure and an unwanting nature

Even in darkest hour can find cure, I am sure,
for an unadorned heart cannot be tainted by worldly venture

Above all these that promise bliss and glory

Nothing can topple, a golden heart that bleeds for you and me,
Their hearts, I know, will embrace you and shower you with flurry.

1. What is the poem about? What words from your list will help you identify the theme of the
poem?
2. What details help create imagery in the poem? Do you have words in your list that help you
imagine these images?
3. How does the persona feel about the theme of the poem? What details or words will help you
identify the tone of the persona’s feelings towards the theme of the poem.
4. What message does the poem convey to the readers? Prove your answer by citing explicit
details (those that are found in the text) and implicit details (those that you can infer or
generalized based on the details provided in the text).

If you were able to answer the questions based on what you have written down as you were listening to
the poem, you did very well in taking down important details. Yes, you have done note-taking. Note-
taking, in its literal sense, means jotting down important details from a text heard or read. However, it
does not end with your list. You need to see how these words are connected to form an idea about the
theme of the text. Using graphic organizers can greatly help in this aspect.

Try using a graphic organizer to show the connection of the words you listed down. Then, go back to
your answers to the questions about the poem. Discuss this with your parents or guardians. Share also
your thoughts on how note-taking helps you in this activity.

On Compound Words

In addition to note-taking, you can further improve your comprehension skills by analyzing context clues
like compound words. Read the short selection below.

THE AFTERSCHOOL ESCAPADE

by Leziel Jayne Maraña
1. On a Friday afternoon, Pedro, Juana, and I ran toward our favorite food truck. Pedro bought a
cheesecake while Juana happily drank her favorite milk tea. I knew my friends like sweets a lot.
We also liked to share food.
2. I was eating spring rolls when Pedro noticed the giggles and cheers from the football field.
“Dada, my godfather is the team coach!” he exclaimed enthusiastically. So, we walked down
the pathway to the bleachers and watched.
3. Juana glanced at her smartwatch. “Oh, it’s already five o’clock. Why don’t we check out the
bookshop in 30 minutes?” I then spoke to Pedro who was so engrossed in watching a match.
“Ah, Pedro! It is almost time for you to pack up. We’ll buy a bookmark!”
4. Thinking he would be a little late, he went to his godfather and said, “Could you please tell my
grandmother that I’ll be home at 6:30?” When we arrived at the store by tricycle, we excitedly
turned the doorknob and entered the store.
Process Questions:

1. In paragraph 1, where did Pedro and his friends go? ________________

2. What food did Pedro buy? ____________________
3. What was the drink that Juana bought? __________________
4. Based on paragraph 3, where will the characters go? ________________
5. What do you call the game being played out in the field? _____________________

Which words or evidence in the passage help you understand the meaning of the following words:
smartwatch, grandfather, bookshop, doorknob, football?

Similar to some of the words used in the selection, the words bellow are examples of compound words.
Can you tell why they are called compound words?

beeline footprint outdoor penknife lighthouse

Yes! Compound words are two or more words combined.

For example:

bee + line = beeline

There are three ways to know the meaning of a compound word. Study the diagram that follows.

Brilliant! You have just learned what compound words are and how to get their meanings based on
context clues, synonyms, and antonyms. At this point, try to underline the compound word in the
following sentences.

a. The burglar left his footprint on the wet cement.

b. How many textbooks do you have in your bag?
c. Have you been to the newest bookstore in town?

For items d to g, highlight the word or words that provide a clue to the meaning of the underlined word.
In the parentheses, choose whether that clue is synonym, antonym, or context clues.

d. Rescuers provide a backstop in times of calamity. (synonym, antonym, context clue)

e. Do not forget to secure a password when logging in to any social media accounts. (synonym,

f. Would you wait for me downstairs rather than stay upstairs? (synonym, antonym, context clue)
g. The lawmakers ask everyone to observe health protocols rather than ignore them. They are the
proper authority who implement safety guidelines. (synonym, antonym, context clue)
CHECKPOINT 1

1. What skills did you use to find the compound words?

2. How will you be able to identify compound words in a text?
3. Why do we need to look at the details presented in a learning material?

CHECKPOINT 2

1. Were you able to get the meaning of compound words based on context
clues?
2. Give the synonym and antonym of these words:
a. progress b. sunlight

TAKEAWAYS:

Reading and listening can be made easy by noting details. While you pick out points from a text, you
may encounter unfamiliar words. You can find out their meanings though the use of context clues,
synonyms, and antonyms. These words in a text help us fully understand the whole message of the
selection.

Kyle is happy to be in Grade 5 now. She has so many plants this school year. She promised to be
the best pupil that she could ever be. She knows that she has to improve her habits if she wants to be
better in school. She plans to manage her time wisely, so she can do all the tasks and responsibilities of a
diligent pupil. She also must be physically fit to perform different school activities.
One of Kyla’s plans is to never sleep late at night. She believes that if she lacks sleep, she will not
be able to focus well on the lessons taught by her teachers. She will also feel weak and not be able to
participate actively in class discussions and other school activities.
Another good habit that Kyla works on is eating plenty of vegetables and fruits because these
will make her healthy and smart. She will also eat on time and avoid drinking soda and synthetic juice. In
addition, she will limit herself from eating too many sweets and avoid fast food products.
Of course, she promises to study well, read a lot, and always do her assignments. With these in
mind, Kyla believes that she is ready to face the new school year.

PAGTALAKAY

(WHO) ang pandemya.

nina Emilia Banlaygas at Eleanor Antonio

Si Aling Salud ay isang biyudang tindera ng isda sa pamilihan. Buong tiyaga niyang inaaruga ang dalawa
niyang anak na babae, sina Susan at Violeta. Si Susan ay isang masipag at masunuring anak. Samantala,
si Violeta naman ay tamad at masungit. Mas maganda si Violeta kaysa kay Susan. Mas matangkad at

“Talagang maaasahan kita, anak. Babayaran kita kapag nakapagtinda na ako sa palengke.”

“Huwag ninyong isipin iyon, Inay. Ang mahalaga ay masuri kayo ng doctor at gumaling,” sagot ni Susan.

Si Dr. Santos ang tinawag ni Susan.

“Aling Salud, Mabuti at ipinatawag ninyo ako. Hindi dapat ipagwalang-bahala ang sakit ninyo. Kung
tumagal-tagal pa ay lalala ang sakit ninyo at maaring magkapulmonya kayo,” sabi ni Dr. Santos. “Heto
ang reseta. Bilhin ninyo agad ang gamot na ito.”

Nang paalis na ang doctor ay inabutan ito ng pera ni Susan.

“Hayaan mon a Susan.

tinapay. May sobre pa.
