Array Antennas: 1 List Two Aspects That Motivate The Application of Antenna Arrays, and Two Aspects That Com-Plicate It

The document discusses array antennas and their advantages and disadvantages. It explains the principle of pattern multiplication which describes how the total radiation pattern is the product of the individual antenna factor and array factor. It also discusses how the polarization of antenna arrays can be controlled using the antenna element pattern factor.

1 List two aspects that motivate the application

of antenna arrays, and two aspects that com-
plicate it.

+ Modular design, easier upgrading

+ Robustness to malfunction
- Inter-element coupling
- Broadband performance difficult

2 Explain the principle of pattern multiplication

the principle of pattern multiplication tells us that the total radiation pattern
is the product of the individual antenna factor and array factor. The first one is
understood as the characteristics of the antenna and the second one is under-
stood as the way that the elements in the array received power as well as the
position of each one. This is described by the next mathematical equation:
e−jkr X
Ef ar ≈ jKπ sin θφ Cn ejkrnr̂ (1)
4πr n

Cn is the weight of each element referred to it’s amplitude and phase

3 How to control the polarization of antenna ar-

rays?
Having the general expression from the far field
e−jkr X
Ef ar ≈ sin θφ Cn ejkrnr̂
4πr n

It is possible to control the polarization using the antenna element pattern

f actore (θ, φ)which indicates the direction from the electric field.
