2. What is drive-reduction theory? Give an example of a situation that fits this theory
The theory of learning in which the goal of motivated behavior is a reduction of a drive state. An
example of this would be getting something to eat when you get hungry.
Intrinsic motivation is a type of motivation that comes from inside. Intrinsically driven behaviors
are carried out because they provide a sense of personal fulfillment. The extrinsic motivator is
external to the individual and acts on them. Extrinsic motivators can include things like a job
4. What is the Cannon-Bard theory? Give an example that illustrates this theory.
According to the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion, stimulating events cause feelings and bodily
reactions at the same time. When you see a snake, for example, you may experience both terror
5. What are the five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? Give an example for each level.
From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: physiological (food and clothing),
safety (job security), love and belonging needs (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization.
you think someone may be lying? What do studies say about how to tell if someone is lying?
I usually look for eye contact and body behavior, they usually are pretty good signs to tell if
2. Psychologists have spent a great deal of time studying what motivates people. What do you
I think it is their wants. If someone wants something, they are more likely to go above and beyond
3. Self-determination theory states that people have an innate need for competence, autonomy,
and relatedness to others. Do you agree with this theory? Do you think that external rewards
I believe this is true for some people, but for others it won’t be. Some people find more pleasure in
external things like money or cars, rather then internal rewards like a sense of confidence or a
feeling of accomplishment.
4. Studies suggest that facial expressions can influence emotions and physiological reactions.
Do you think these studies are correct? Do you think that smiling can make you happy or that
making an angry expression can raise your temperature? Why or why not?
I think that it can have an effect, but the majority of the time I don’t think it does. There’s a lot of
people who mask their true feelings with facial expressions, but they don’t actually feel that way.
