M1 Measurement Worksheet

1. The document describes experiments measuring various scientific properties including length, volume, mass, density, and surface area. It involves using tools like graduated cylinders, burets, and balances to measure the properties of samples. 2. Experiments included measuring the length of a line, volumes of liquids in graduated cylinders, mass of various pennies from different years, volume and density of regular and irregular solids, and surface area and density calculations. 3. Questions at the end involve calculating surface area, density from mass and volume information, and using displacement method to find density of an object from change in water volume.

Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Worksheet

Module 1: Measurements
Group No: 9
Name:________________________________________Date:__________________
Year & Sec:____________________________________Rating:_________________

Scientific Measurements Experiment

Part I. Measuring distance
Based on the video, what is the length of the bold black line in centimeters?
Answer: 12.9 cm

Part II. Volume of Liquids Graduated Cylinders

1. Write down the size of the first graduated cylinder shown.
Answer: 10 L
2. Measure the volume and record the volume reading.
Answer: 3.5 ML

3. Write down the size of the second graduated cylinder shown.

Answer: 100 L
Measure the volume and record.
Answer: 77 ml

4. Write down the size of the 3rd graduated cylinder shown.

Answer: 1000L
Measure the volume and record it.
Answer: 720 ml
Part II Measuring Volume of Liquids- Test Tubes
Buret reading before filling the test tube: 0mL
Buret reading after filling the test tube: 40.8 mL

Volume in the graduated cylinder with the test tube contents: 9.3mL

Part III. Measuring Volume of Solid Objects- Direct Measurements

Length: 6.5 cm
Width: 1 cm
Height: 1 cm
Calculate the volume of the object.
Formula: L x W x H
Solution: 6.5cm x 1cm x 1cm = 6.5 cm^3
Final answer: 6.5 cubic meter

Part III Measuring Volume of Solid Objects – Volume Displacements

The volume of water in the graduated cylinder before the addition of solid object: 30 mL
The volume of the graduated cylinder after the addition of the solid object: 40 mL

Part IV. Measuring Mass

Penny weighed Weight of the penny (g)

1993 penny 2.487 g

1974 penny 3.062 g

1989 penny 2.540 g

1980 penny 3.099 g

1988 penny 2.512 g

1960 penny 3.099 g

2017 penny 2.501 g

1982 penny 3.106 g

1997 penny 2.495 g

Using EXCEL, graph the year of the penny (x-axis) vs weight of the penny (y-axis)

Part V. Density Experiment

Density of a regular shaped solid
Length: 2.41 cm
Width: 2.4 cm
Height: 2.5 cm
Calculate the volume of the aluminum cube.

Volume of cube = l x w x h
= 2.41 x 2.4 x 2.5
= 14.46 cm ^ 3
Volume of cube = 14 cm ^ 3

Mass of the aluminum block: 45.640 g

Density of the aluminum block: 3.2 g/cm ^ 3
Solution:
p = m/v
p = 45.640 g / 14.46 cm ^ 3
p = 3.1563 g/cm ^ 3
p = 3.2 g/cm ^ 3

Density of an Irregularly Shaped Object

Mass of the irregularly shaped object: 70.703 g

Volume of the irregularly shaped object: V1 = 30 mL

V2 = 40 mL

Density of the irregularly shaped solid: 7 g/mL

Solution:
p = m/v p = 70.703 g / 10 mL
p = 7 g/mL
V = V2 - V1
V = 40 mL - 30 mL
V = 10 mL

Post Lab Questions

1. If I have a cube that is 1 meter on each side, what is the surface area of one
side in square centimeters?
2. Density: A barge company wants to float
supplies down the Pasig River. To make
the most money, they want to fill the barge
as much as possible. The barge has a
length of 15 meters, a width of 6 meters,
and a height of 2 meters. The company
plans to load the barge with 200,000
kilograms of goods. What is the density of
the barge in grams per cubic
centimeter? Will the barge float?
Note: The density of water is 1.00 g/ cm3
3. A double A alkaline battery weighs 23.0
grams. The battery was placed in a
graduated cylinder containing water
with an initial volume of 12.4 mL. After
the battery was placed in the graduated
cylinder, the level of water inside the
graduated cylinder became 20.2 mL.
Calculate the density of the double-A
alkaline battery.
