Exercise 1
What is the unit of the specific volume?
Exercise 2
Consider a balloon filled with air at 12.1 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 2 atm.
Calculate the density (in kg/m3 ) and the specific volume of the air (in the unit of the previous
question) in this balloon.
Exercise 3
Please finish the following statement: "A streamline is a line that is..."
A) Defined by the individual trajectories that fluid particles follow.
B) Tangential to the velocity at every point.
C) Formed by a set of fluid particles that were marked at a previous instant in time.
D) Formed by the particles that have passed through a prescribed point.
Exercise 4
Consider the flow around a wing as shown in the picture below. What is the pressure in point A
called?
Exercise 5
During the derivation of the Euler (momentum) equation, three forces were acting on the volume:
a pressure force, a gravity force, and a friction force.
Which force(s) was/were neglected during this derivation? (Multiple answers can be correct)
A) The force due to pressure
B) The friction force
C) The gravity force
Exercise 6
Consider the following statements:
1) The Euler equation and the continuity equation can be applied to unsteady flow.
2) The Euler equation is valid for flows with friction.
Select the answer that matches:
A) Only statement 1 is true.
B) Only statement 2 is true.
C) Both statement 1 and statement 2 are true.
D) Neither statement 1 nor statement 2 is true.
Exercise 7
Suppose it is your job to make a subsonic, incompressible windtunnel. The test section should be
square, 2 x 2m. The conditions in the test section are given to be standard sea level conditions
and a flow speed of 50 m/s.
Exercise 8
Consider an airfoil in a flow of air, where far ahead (upstream) of the airfoil, the pressure, velocity
and density are: 1.01 · 105 N/m2 , 150 km/h and 1.225 kg/m3 respectively.
At a point A on the airfoil the pressure is 9.95 · 104 N/m2 . Calculate the velocity in A (in
m/s).
Exercise 9
In a wind tunnel a flow is sped up. In the reservoir the velocity is approximately zero, in the test
section the air is at standard conditions with a flow speed of 30 m/s.
A) What is the total pressure in the test section (in Pa)?
B) What is the static pressure in the reservoir (in Pa)?
Exercise 10
After the 2010 eruptions of the Eyjafjallajökull vulcano in Iceland, air traffic (including general
aviation) was suspended for days in large parts of Europe. Even glider aircraft were initially not
allowed to fly: authorities were afraid that the static ports of the glider would get blocked by the
ash, which would cause the altimeter to remain at zero altitude and the speed indicator to display
incorrect values.
Consider a glider flying at 400 m altitude, when all of a sudden the static ports get blocked due
to volcanic ash. The pressure at this altitude is 96,610 Pa. It then descends to sea-level where it
flies at a true airspeed of 25 m/s.
What is the airspeed indicated by the pitot-tube driven airspeed indicator in m/s?
