Lab Activity #1:: University of The East

This document describes a lab activity on designing and simulating a program counter circuit. The activity aims to familiarize students with how a program counter works. It provides learning outcomes, materials needed, schematic diagram, IC pin configuration, expected output, questions, and additional tasks using a seven segment display. The student is asked to observe the LED lights counting from 1 to 15 in binary format in the simulation, and explain their observation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:

 Design a program counter

 Familiarize on how the program counter works.

LIST OF MATERIALS NEEDED:

 1pc – Breadboard
 1pc – 4pin dip switch
 4pcs – LED
 1pc – clock source
 2pcs – 74ls107 (dual JK Flip-flop) or 74ls73 (dual JK Master-slave Flip-flop)
 ¼ watts resistor
 5-volt battery source

EXPECTED OUTPUT:
The expected output should appear as if the LED lights are counting from 1 to 15 (in
binary, base 2)

SIMULATION:
The circuit trainer has built-in control switches and value switches. For this run, you must
make sure that the value switches are all off (LOW) and RUN and AUTO are on (HIGH)

IMPLEMENTATION:

QUESTIONS:
Observe and explain the transition of the LED lights and write your observation below.

Base on my observation of the simulation of program counter circuit it shows

that the LED lights is blinking and displaying 1 to 15 in binary form.

ADDITIONAL TASK:
After you have effectively created a working program counter, incorporate the use of a SEVEN
SEGMENT DISPLAY. You can use a decoder in order to effectively show the expected
output (which is the same, but this time it must be displayed on its decimal format, counting
from 1-15.

REFLECTION
In this lab activity I’ve learned how the program counter works even though we

just run it in Multisim. For me working in the lab activity helps me deeply understand the

process in the program counter. I’ve also experienced some errors and problem but after several

times of repeation I’ve managed to fix and solve the problems. For me this experiment will help

us more to understand on what is the true nature of the computer architecture and organization

this will also help us to be a better computer engineers in the future.
